Chapter 536 Great Again

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

Xunzi¡¯s era was the era of strong Qin and Chu. The Qi State had been severely weakened by the previous alliance of Yan, Qin, Zhao, Wei and Han.

Lian Heng coexist, and even a large country brings a group of small countries.  Qi suffered heavy losses, and Qin became the overlord of the West for a time by annexing Hanzhong and Shu.

Now all countries are facing a problem. If the Qin State succeeds, then the Qin State will become the most powerful.  If the small countries join forces to fight against Qin, then Chu will be promoted.

This raises the issue of overpowering Qin and Chu, because these two countries are now the largest among the seven, and they are also the countries most likely to change the pattern of the Warring States Period.

The State of Qin has now also produced a siphon effect. Many talents studied in the Jixia Academy of Qi State, but in the end they all went to the State of Qin.

Xunzi is now offering wine in Jixia Academy and managing the affairs of the academy.  Now Jixia Academy is full of utilitarianism, because everyone comes to study for fame and fortune, not for knowledge, not for the safety of the world, but for glory and wealth.

In this situation, it is naturally impossible for Mr. Xunzi to continue to agree with Mencius' theory of good nature. As a master of hundreds of schools of thought, he put forward the "theory of evil nature" in a high-profile manner.

It is very simple to deduce the theory of evil nature. First of all, desire and evil are the same, that is, everyone likes the same things, everyone hates the same things, and everyone¡¯s standards for liking and disliking are the same.  Food, beauty, luxury and comfort are all things that everyone likes.  Death, aging, disease, poverty, and hunger are all things that everyone hates.

"But there are many desires and few things. There are many people who like beautiful things, but there are few material things that cannot meet everyone's needs, so the world is in chaos. Therefore, from the pursuit of material desires, we can infer that human nature is evil.

When Xunzi wrote "Not the Twelve Scholars", he pulled out twelve scholars representing various schools of thought and gave them a scolding. Of course, he mainly scolded the dead people and scolded them for misleading people.  Although Confucius is not included, he is not polite to Confucius's disciples and calls them "cheap Confucianism". The word "cheap" is not an adjective but a verb.  It¡¯s not that Confucius¡¯ disciples are despicable Confucians, but that they make Confucianism despicable.

Since Confucius¡¯ disciples and descendants made Confucianism humble, how can we make Confucianism great again?  Naturally, we have to listen to Xunzi.

This is just like Confucius saying that the Spring and Autumn Period was too bad, but the era of Yao, Shun, and Yu, and the era of Zhou Gongdan were the same.  Confucius honored the past and abused the present, but Xunzi did the opposite. He did not say that ancient times were good, but said that ancient scholars were bad and said that they made Confucianism despicable. In fact, they were all trying to compete for the right to interpret what was good.

Xunzi¡¯s goal is to make Confucianism great again.  To put forward a point of view and get everyone to accept it quickly, the most direct way is to curse people.  Don't look at what he supports, look at what he opposes, which can often help everyone understand the proposition.

It¡¯s no wonder that Confucians in the future are reluctant to admit that Xunzi is a Confucian scholar. It¡¯s also no wonder that Xunzi¡¯s two most famous students, Li Si and Han Feizi, are both representatives of Legalism.  After all, if one admits Xunzi, one must also admit the content of Xunzi's criticism of Confucianism. Then, Xunzi's lineage will be the authentic Confucianism, and other branches of Confucianism will become "base Confucianism". Who can bear this?

The final result was that Xunzi¡¯s most outstanding disciple became a Legalist. Not only did Xunzi fail to become the most authentic Confucian, he was almost expelled from Confucianism.  After all, no one can bear the thought of their master being scolded as a ¡®cheap Confucian¡¯. If the master is called a ¡®cheap Confucian¡¯, then wouldn¡¯t these disciples and their descendants also be called a ¡®cheap Confucian¡¯?  To acknowledge Xunzi is to scold yourself.

In order to prove that he was good and correct, Xunzi first criticized the previous scholars and asked everyone not to learn from them but to learn from themselves.

"Make Confucianism great again." Yunyao said he was very ambitious, and Xunzi did break away from the moral consciousness of Confucius and Mencius, but first presupposed the evil of human nature. This is indeed very progressive, but the rest is all  Confucianism is rubbish.

Yunyao came to the mortal world again, this time she was alone, because she was going to heaven to attend the Peach Fair soon, and time was tight, so the main thing was to select a group of people, and after they died, they could go to Zhucheng to study, and then  Participate in the Tianguan Imperial Examination.

Yunyao came to Jixia Academy again. Although there were students in the academy who wanted to get ahead in the past, they were not as popular as they are now. Now everyone is just for fame and fortune.  Especially after having many successful cases, these students are even more eager to try and use whatever means necessary.

When Yunyao came, Xunzi was dealing with some forgeries.

Li Si and Han Fei are also helping, including "Zhong Ni Shuo Li".

"This set of bamboo slips must have been written specifically to target the teacher." Li Si said: "Han Fei, you are a Korean aristocrat with a large collection of books. Have you ever heard of such strange talk?"

?? Han Fei is very knowledgeable and has read this set of bamboo slips before: "I have read it, although it is a pretense. The name of Confucius has nothing to do with being a gentleman or morals, it is just some weird talk.  Moreover, it contains a dialogue between Confucius and a female disciple. The content is bizarre and difficult to scrutinize, so I just regarded it as entertainment.  "The form of "Zhong Ni Shuo Li" is the same as "The Analects", and it is also conducted through the dialogue between Confucius and his students. However, the Analects does not admit that Confucius had a female disciple, but most of the content in "Zhong Ni Shuo Li" is  The conversation between Confucius and his female disciples was dominated by the female disciples, while Confucius acted like a student.

"The teacher said that there are many desires but few things, so we have to clearly divide the groups. However, "Zhong Ni Shuo Li" said that we can use a technique similar to the Mohist mechanism to turn everyone into princes, so that everyone can have something to eat.  There is endless food, endless cloth to wear, and countless livestock to raise. If you want to have more things, then the teacher's opinion is dangerous. I think the author of this fake book has good intentions." Li Si said.

Han Fei said: "That's true, but these methods are simply impossible to achieve. Even the Mohists, who are best at institutions, can't let people live such a life, let alone the illusion of fake books."

"Dividing envoys into groups is Xunzi's strategy for dealing with people with many desires and few resources. "Dividing" here refers to identity.  To make a group means to establish a society.  Therefore, clarifying identity and running society is actually the same as what Confucius said, except that he believed that Confucius's name rectification no longer worked, and now it should be rectified again.  That's why Xunzi scolded all Confucius' disciples and started over again, redetermining social status through new etiquette.

So since everyone is a bad person, who will establish new etiquette and who will be the savior?  Xunzi believed that he was a gentleman.

Xunzi believes that a gentleman can rebuild etiquette. A gentleman can release a kind of character from the inside out through self-cultivation. A gentleman with such a character can establish new etiquette and put the world back on track.

So where do gentlemen come from?  It comes from self-cultivation. How to cultivate one¡¯s self?  Cultivate your body according to etiquette.  Where does that etiquette come from?  Come, gentleman.  Where do gentlemen come from?  Etiquette comes from self-cultivation.  Where does etiquette come from

There is a problem with Xunzi, that is, which comes first, the etiquette or the gentleman, is just like the chicken or the egg, which cannot be solved at all.

If the old etiquette can still cultivate gentlemen, then it makes no sense for Xunzi to scold the Twelve Sons, because the Twelve Sons demand themselves according to the old etiquette.  But if the old rituals don¡¯t work, where will the new ones come from?  Xunzi cannot answer this question, unless there is a person who is born a gentleman and can achieve noble moral character without self-cultivation. But if there is such a person, then the theory of evil nature is untenable.  Because everyone is born a bad person, how can there be a natural gentleman?
