    However, in the chaos after the earthquake, Japan spread rumors that "North Koreans were going to riot." The army, police and citizens killed 6,000 Koreans and more than 600 Chinese.

    Just five years later, there was the Jinan Massacre, in which Chinese diplomats had their tongues cut off and their eyes gouged out by the Japanese on their own land.
