    Chapter 3

Jicheng No. 1 Middle School, where Chen Wan and her cousin studied, ranks first in the city in terms of teaching staff and college admissions rate, ranking first among the worst.

No. 1 Middle School is located in the old city. Most of the nearby areas are factory-affiliated areas and old streets. The quality of the students varies. Some of them are studying hard in the hope of getting out of this environment. Some are free to find a job in the future. There are also some who simply regard their study career as  For fun.

Based on Chen Wan¡¯s past academic performance, she could definitely enter the Affiliated Middle School, Experimental or Railway No. 1 Middle School. Unfortunately, a big change occurred at home more than two years ago, and her grades plummeted to the lowest point.  After taking care of her father's funeral, she could only go to No. 1 Middle School due to her high school entrance examination results and the environment at her uncle's house.

Her relatives on her father's side avoided her like a ghost, and the intimacy she had in the past was just an illusion.  The tea cools when people leave, and everyone pushes against the wall. At the age of sixteen, she already understood the profound truth.

"It's my uncle instead."  Her uncle, whom she had not interacted with for many years, took her in.

I heard my mother say before that my uncle was not very satisfied with my father.  He felt that as a scholar, his father was not as noble as a scholar and was too utilitarian.  My father was already at the municipal bureau level at the age of forty, and his family was usually busy in the living room. My uncle probably didn¡¯t want to be the icing on the cake, so since my mother died of illness, my uncle rarely interacted with her family.

She remembers the turning point in her life, when Uncle Liu from the General Affairs Office came to her home.  Uncle Liu had a habit of smiling first when meeting people. He was chubby, and the features on his round face were squeezed into a ball, like a Maitreya Buddha.  He often brings things to his home, and Chen Wan has eaten a lot of Yangcheng Lake hairy crabs he sent.  That day he smiled more affectionately than usual. When he entered the room, he looked around, and then asked her: "Xiao Wan, why is there no adult at home?"

She was in a panic all day long, sitting huddled in the corner, her eyes bulging.  Even my father's funeral affairs were taken care of by his work unit. His relatives only came to walk around, said a few symbolic words of comfort, and then left in a panic.  She was afraid that she would be infected with the bad luck of her family, or that she, an orphan, would be attached to her.  Where are the adults?

"Xiao Wan, don't worry, if you have any difficulties, just raise them and the organization will help solve them." Uncle Liu smiled and narrowed his eyes, "However, the bureau's housing allocation is very difficult, and many people still live in the old family areas.  What the organization means is -" he considered his words, "the bureau has discussed that although your father has made mistakes that harmed the party and the people, you are still a child. We have studied it. You want to move back to your old home first?  Is the family area okay? The Living Expenses Bureau will be responsible for you until you are eighteen. But this house -" he rubbed his hands and looked around, "we must give priority to solving the difficulties of other comrades in the bureau."

No matter how dazed Chen Wan was, she realized that he was chasing her away.  She lowered her head to prevent Uncle Liu from seeing the tears in her eyes.

    "Who are you?"

She raised her head and looked at the one who came in and spoke.  For a moment, the face felt familiar, and then I realized it was my uncle.  My heart felt hot, my nose felt sore, and I almost shed tears.

"I am from the General Affairs Office, my surname is Liu."

"I am Gong Ziqiang. Xiaowan's uncle."

Uncle Liu breathed a sigh of relief, an adult finally appeared.  It's really hard to deal with driving a child out of the house, and I can't bear it. After all, there are still feelings from the past.  He hurriedly explained his purpose clearly, and his uncle nodded and said he understood, and promised him to move within a few days.

In this way, Chen Wan moved to her uncle's house, which was also her mother's home before she got married.

Her life in the past two years has been like a world away from her past life, but the material poverty and heavy housework have had a strange healing effect.  She rushes to do housework, and also likes to spend a long time with her uncle in the kitchen using the ingredients to make a good pot of soup and a feast. Occasionally, she will worry about the quality of the business and her future livelihood, but all of this makes her sense of existence  It was extremely strong, she was not a helpless orphan, she could also do something for this new family.

It took her half a year to integrate into the new environment, and her eyes regained a glimmer of brilliance.  In her first year in No. 1 Middle School, her midterm exam results surprised several teachers, but her complicated social relationships outside school gave them headaches.

    Because Fang Cunzheng is right.

Teachers who have worked in No. 1 Middle School for some years are all deeply impressed by Fang¡¯s brothers.  The boss, Fang Shouzheng, was a well-known gangster leader in Jicheng many years ago. When he was still in the first and second grades of junior high school, he started to join groups of young people in and out of the school, ignoring the school rules and disciplines, as if he was in no one's land.  Fang Shouzheng was imprisoned for manslaughter, and his brother and territory were taken over by his younger brother Fang Cunzheng.  Fang Cunzheng was quite well-behaved when he was in school, but the changes after dropping out made his class teacher shake his head when he thought about it.  The eldest brother is reckless, while the second child is cautious; the eldest brother is ruthless, while the second child is unyielding.  The two Fang brothers are in Jicheng, especially in the west of the city. What Fang Cunzheng said was so exaggerated.  Every time he shamelessly intervened in her life under this pretense, but she could only grit her teeth secretly, unable to do anything.

"Anyway, you don't have to worry about it!" she said anxiously.  Xiaoyu just had a quarrel with his classmates today. It's normal for boys to have bad tempers and start fights without saying a word. Who would have thought that someone from Fang Cunzheng saw it?  If it becomes a big disaster, how can she explain it to her uncle and aunt?

"I don't care? I don't care, you would have been dragged into the back alley -" Fang Cunzheng snorted coldly and did not continue.

More than two years ago, when Chen Wan was going home alone after studying at night, she was followed all the way to Zhuque Street by two green men. In the dim moonlight, they dragged her into a back alley. The back alley was always deserted and the only dogs around could be heard.  Barking and her cry for help, if it hadn't been for him that time, she probably didn't understand that in this environment, it was a sin for a girl to be beautiful, and she was really too beautiful, too dazzling.  .  He said it just because he didn't want something like this to happen again, but she completely ignored it and even accused him of interfering with her life.

"Stop talking about this, why don't I take less care of you from now on?" He knew that she looked down on him and thought he was uneducated, but he just had no temper with her.  "Go to my house for dinner? How many days has my mother been talking about you?"
