There are six holding sites in Hanshou and Yuanjiang counties, each housing at least three to four hundred people and as many as seven or eight hundred people.  Zhang Xian and his party led a company to the largest shelter in Yuanjiang County. There were more than 800 wounded and defeated soldiers of the national army in this shelter.

Although the Battle of Western Hubei has long ended, these soldiers who were dispersed in the first stage have not been properly resettled. In the shelter, they can only eat one meal a day, and they often have more wolves and less meat.  Many people can't get it yet.  After more than two months, most of the people have become a group of ragged and skinny people, all of them looking like beggars.  And just because they didn't have enough food and clothing, many people went out to rob and steal things from fellow villagers. They were hated by the nearby villagers as bandits and thieves, and the county magistrate couldn't do anything about it.

It turned out that after the 73rd Army and the 87th Army were dispersed, they were contained and reorganized near Yuanjiang and Changde. However, due to the intense fighting in western Hubei, the two armies left for western Hubei before they could all be contained. Therefore,  Many soldiers came to the shelter one after another, but they became homeless stragglers.

After the battle, the 73rd Army returned to defend Nanxian and Anxiang, but because it had free pay, it was in no hurry to come over and gather these stragglers; while the 87th Army was transferred to other places, and might also have the same free pay.  No one was sent to collect these people even though they had no intention of paying them, so these shelters were temporarily overcrowded and became a headache for the local government.

If it weren¡¯t for the constant feedback from the local county magistrate, the soldiers in these shelters might have been forgotten.

Zhang Xian came to this shelter accompanied by County Magistrate Liu. For the County Magistrate, being able to take away these bad soldiers was as happy as having a cancerous tumor removed from his body.

Walking into this shelter, the stationmaster of the shelter hurriedly came out to greet him. This stationmaster was only temporarily appointed by the county magistrate. He should be the leader among these wounded and defeated soldiers, but no one would listen to this old man's arrangements.  If this little old man hadn't been able to get rice from the county magistrate and satisfy his hunger and thirst, he would have been skinned by these hungry ghosts.

¡°Perhaps they heard that they were going to be recruited today. Many honest soldiers followed the station commander¡¯s orders and lined up in several teams on the playground. Although they were scattered and twisted, they were finally one team.  Looking at these sallow, thin, ghost-like soldiers, some of whom were still children, and some of whom had wounds and dirty broken belts, Zhang Xian felt indescribable pain in his heart.

"Are these our soldiers?" Chang Liqiang, who was following Zhang Xian, asked Zhang Xian in disbelief.

Zhang Xian nodded and told him: "Yes, these people will be our brothers from now on!"

"Oh my God!" Chang Liqiang only said this sentence and never answered again.  In his opinion, when he was in the most desperate situation, the puppet soldiers were not as slovenly as these people.

The station master handed the roster of the people in the station to the county magistrate, who handed it to Zhang Xian himself, and Zhang Xian handed it to Gao Wei who was beside him.  He came to these people, found a stone and stood on it, so that he could see the entire team clearly.  His eyes glanced downward, and these soldiers gradually became quiet. After all, they were once regular soldiers who had received training and knew how to observe discipline.

Zhang Xian nodded, these people are still much stronger than the newly recruited strong men.  He cleared his throat and said loudly: "Brothers, my name is Zhang Xian, and from today on, I will be your group leader." As he spoke, he glanced down again and saw many people whispering.  Apparently asking for his name.  He smiled slightly, signaled everyone to quiet down, and continued: "You may not have heard of me. Let me introduce myself. I was transferred from the 11th Division to the 74th Army" He hadn't finished speaking yet.  , a guy below shouted: "Are you the little battalion commander of the 11th Division?" Zhang Xian was stunned. He didn't expect that his fame could spread here. He nodded and told everyone: "Yes.  ! I am the small battalion commander of the 11th Division, but now I am the regiment commander. Haha, how does this brother know me?" The guy laughed and said happily: "Little battalion commander, the few of us were recruited by you  Among the more than 4,000 prisoners of war rescued from the Japanese."

Zhang Xian then understood, laughed, and said: "It seems that I am still destined to everyone. If this is the case, I, the leader, am no longer an outsider!"

¡°Captain, when can we have enough to eat?¡± Another boy shouted from below.  This shout immediately caused everyone to boo, and everyone wanted to have a full meal.

Zhang Xian jumped off the stone and said to the county magistrate beside him: "County Magistrate Liu, I will take all these soldiers away. Before taking them away, I ask you to prepare one last meal for them! I want them to be full!"

Liu CountyThey broke up, and the company commander took me to move south. In order to cover the wounded, he fought with five Japanese with bayonets. I helped him kill one, and he killed three by himself, and the other stabbed him.  One stab and ran away.  Later we swam across the Caowei River and arrived here, but his wound became infected.  "

"Why didn't you treat his injury in time?" Zhang Xian asked.

"There is no doctor! There is no medicine!" Wei Lengzi cried: "We can't walk anymore, and we have no money. When the doctors nearby heard about coming here, they all hid far away, so I could only steal some  White wine to disinfect."

"How long has it been like this?"

"It's been more than a month!"

Zhang Xian shook his head, sighed, and said to Sima Yun: "If you continue like this, you will be finished!"

Sima Yun did not speak immediately, but looked at him with his still bright eyes, and said after a long time: "If you can heal my injury, my life will be yours!"

Zhang Xian was startled, laughed, but shook his head.

Sima Yun and Wei Lengzi were both stunned for a moment, looking extremely desperate.

Zhang Xian saw what they were thinking and explained: "Company Commander Sima, everyone in this shelter is mine now, I want them all, and I will definitely heal all the wounded, including you of course.  It¡¯s just that your injury is relatively serious and it won¡¯t be cured in Yuanjiang. You have to go to Changde. I will immediately ask my guards to drive you to the hospital in Changde in my car!¡±

The despairing eyes of Sima Yun and Wei Lengzi suddenly became alive again.

Zhang Xian also said: "However, you have to remember that your life is not mine or anyone else's, it is your own. At this time of national crisis, since you have become a soldier, then  , your life belongs to the country, and you will die on the battlefield even if you die!"

The two men nodded at the same time.  (Remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com
