Sun Yuanqi nodded: "The imperial edict was published in the newspaper."

The old man sighed: "It's a pity that Xiang Tao fell short."

"Why did my uncle say this?"

The old man leaned on the back of his chair and said slowly: "Before Xiang Tao passed away, it was said that the imperial court had decided to use 'Wenzheng' or 'Wenzhong'. Looking at Xiang Tao's life and deeds, he also deserves these two posthumous titles.

"After Xiang Tao passed away, the Zhang Mansion immediately invited people to visit the cabinet, hoping to finalize the two posthumous titles of 'Wenzheng' or 'Wenzhong'. The regent has always had no opinions, just like a dwarf watching a play, just following people's gossip;  Lu Dingxing was a rolling-curtain military aircraft. He devoted himself to cultivating closed-mouthed speech and never expressed any opinions. Therefore, he mainly participated in three offices: Prince Qing, Shixu, and Na Tong. Na Tong readily agreed, but he was the last to join the military aircraft, and his words were slightly less weighty.  Not enough; but Prince Qing and Shixu had a lot of grudges with Xiang Tao on weekdays, and the trustee said that although Xiang did not refuse, it seemed that he did not mean what he said.

"There is a sentence in Xiangtao's legacy, 'The ministers, Empress Xiaozhenxian and Empress Xiaoqinxian, were promoted to the top, and when they met the emperor, although the Empress Dowager Xuanren of the Song Dynasty could not be farther than the minister Su Shi of the Song Dynasty,' it also expresses her thoughts euphemistically.  Like Su Shi, he received the posthumous title of "Wenzhong". Little did he know that he called the Queen Mother of the West, which happened to violate the taboo of the regent. Later, there was "Fang, the Tao Ling Yi in this world, people are free, they compete for bribes, and they learn from each other. I especially wish that I  The emperor appointed upright and honest people, and those who are greedy and profit-seeking will be excluded.' Several words such as '' offended Prince Qing and Na Tong. In the end, he only got one 'Wen Xiang'. Didn't Xiang Tao fall short of his achievements?"

I didn¡¯t expect that there would be so many secrets in finalizing a posthumous title.  But this is not an isolated case. The publication of obituaries in the People's Daily in later generations is actually the same power struggle: should it be published on the first page or the fourth page?  Where is it posted on the page?  Can I have a posthumous photo?  How many words does the content contain?  What attributive is used to describe it?  ¡

Sun Yuanqi said: "I think 'Wenxiang' is good, he is both civil and military, and isn't Duke Zuo of Xiangyin also given the posthumous title 'Wenxiang'?"

The old man shook his head slightly: "Wen Xiang is naturally excellent, but it does not match Xiang Tao's life ambition. Even in terms of the Sino-French Vietnam War and the protection of the southeast, Xiang Tao has considerable military exploits, so he should be called 'Xiang'  character, then he should follow the example of Liu Zhongcheng (Liu Kunyi) and be awarded a title after his death. The result? No title was given.

"In terms of honor and wealth, his achievements are far inferior to Xiang Tao. He has never joined the military in his life. He just went hunting with him in the West. After his death, he was given the posthumous title of 'Wenzhong' and was given a first-class baron. Why did Xiang Tao not get the title of 'Wenzhong' as he wished?  He was given a posthumous title, but he didn¡¯t get a title as a gift? So everyone in the Zhang family is quite dissatisfied."

The conferral of titles in the Qing Dynasty was divided into two categories: titles during lifetime and gifts after death.  The titles awarded to ministers outside the clan, except for the kings with different surnames at the beginning of the founding of the People's Republic of China, there are five types from high to low: duke, marquis, uncle, son, and male, each of which is divided into first, second, and third grades, totaling fifteen  class.  Despite the large number of levels, the Qing Dynasty actually had very strict control over titles, and did not grant them to many people at all.  Among these few recipients, bannermen accounted for the vast majority, while Han officials were as few as morning stars.  After Xianfeng, there were rebels and bandits at home, foreign powers invaded, and the bannermen were ignorant and incompetent. The Han people began to take control of the military, and more and more people were awarded titles.  Since Tongzhi, the Han people who have received titles include:

Zeng Guofan was granted the title of First-Class Yiyong Marquis.

Li Hongzhang was granted the title of First-class Su Yibo and was given the title of First-class Suyi Marquis.

Zuo Zongtang was granted the title of Second-Class Marquis of Kejing.

Zeng Guoquan was awarded the title of First-class Wei Yibo.

Li Chendian and Bao Chao were awarded first-class titles.

Liu Mo (son of Liu Songshan) was granted the title of second-class son.

Xiao Fusi, Liu Mingchuan, Zhang Yinqing (son of Zhang Guoliang), Liu Jintang, were awarded first-class male titles.

Liu Kunyi, a first-class male gift.

Yang Yuke, Huang Wanpeng, Yu Huen and Feng Guozhang were awarded second-class male titles.

Huang Yisheng, Hu Huxun (son of Hu Linyi), Li Guangjiu (son of Li Xubin), Cheng Jianxun (son of Cheng Xuequi), Peng Xiuting (son of Peng Yuju), Cen Chunrong (son of Cen Yuying), Zhang Duanben (son of Zhang Yao), were awarded the third-class male title.

Song Qing, a third-class male gift.

In the past fifty or sixty years, only more than twenty people have been granted the title, and many of them are the heirs of the ministers who died, which shows the degree of scarcity.  Once something is scarce, it becomes sought after.  Therefore, if you don't get the posthumous title of "Wenzhong", getting a knighthood is a good consolation prize.

Sun Yuanqi said: "In this case, can the Zhang family ask the court to change the posthumous title or give a title?"

"Posthumous titles and titles are all famous things in the world. They are the most valued and should not be faked easily. The appointment can only be made at the discretion of Qian Gang. How can there be any reason for one's own petition to be made? What an idiot!" The old man was made to laugh.  "Of course, it is possible to change one's posthumous title or even take away one's posthumous title. When this happens, eitherThey were unwilling to take the medicine, so they had to move to the main hall.  A quarter of an hour ago, my grandfather suddenly woke up and said he wanted to see you and had something to tell you.  "

Sun Yuanqi suddenly felt numb all over and had difficulty breathing.  There is an old saying in the countryside: "Men are afraid of being smart, and women are afraid of being confused." When a man suddenly wakes up after being seriously ill, it is probably a flashback before death.  From this point of view, the boss may be dying.

There was deathly silence in the yard, and everyone¡¯s expression was very solemn.  When they came to the main hall, the descendants of the old man were standing around. When they saw Sun Yuan arriving, they quickly made way.  At the end of the road, the old man was lying on the bed, covered with a thick quilt.  Sun Yuanqi walked a few steps quickly, knelt down in front of the bed, and whispered: "Uncle, my grandnephew is here to see you!" Tears flowed down his face as he spoke.

The old man's face was sallow, without any blood. Hearing this, his eyes lit up and he slowly turned his head: "Bai Xi, you are here."

"Well" Sun Yuan burst into tears.

The old man in turn advised: "Birth, old age, illness and death are inevitable for everyone. I have lived for eighty-three years. According to the custom of my hometown, it is already a joy and a death. Why should I be sad? Baixi, don't cry, listen carefully to what I say."

Sun Yuanqi said with tears in his eyes: "Uncle, please tell me, I'm listening!"

The boss said: "People in the officialdom are sinister. In the past, I could barely help you. From now on, you have to be on your own and must be careful. You are very good to your subordinates. I don't need to say more. The key is your superiors. You must rely on them."  Official rules must be followed carefully, and you can no longer be as angry as before in book business. Do you remember?"

"I've written it down!" Sun Yuanqi replied.  But I thought in my heart, once you pass away, I will resign from office so as not to see the faces of the courtiers.

The old man seemed to know what Sun Yuanqi was thinking, and immediately said: "Do you still remember what I entrusted you before? Now you are the minister, and you are also considered a high-ranking official in the court. After my death, for the sake of the same surname and the same clan, remember to  Take care of your uncles and brothers. Just ask them to abide by the law and live a safe life like ordinary people. If they do evil things and speak dirty words, you don't have to protect them, even if they are severely punished."

Seeing Sun Yuan nodded, the old man continued: "The last one, I am from Shouzhou, Anhui, and you are from Huai'an, Jiangsu. Although they have the same surname, they have already been in the fifth service. So after my death, you only need to excuse yourself and don't have to take leave to mourn.  .Did you remember it?¡±

?? Ancient China was a society of etiquette and law. If an official died within five years of his or her relative's death, he or she had to take leave to mourn. The longest stay was three years, and the shortest stay was three months.  If you take a long leave of absence, your position may not be available when you return.  That¡¯s why Mr. Lao made a special statement about this.

"The boss was very kind and kind to me. After his death, as a younger generation, I couldn't mourn, so how could I feel at ease?"  Sun Yuanqi said: "Uncle, I¡ª¡ª"

"You want me to die with my eyes open?" The boss said with a stern look.

Sun Yuanqi had no choice but to relent: "Yes, my nephew and grandson have all remembered it."

Hearing the answer, the old man relaxed all over, his energy flowed away quickly like water, and his breathing became rapid.  The children and grandchildren panicked, some gathered around, and some went to call the doctor.  The old man suddenly grabbed Sun Yuanqi's hand and asked in a low voice: "Baixi, do you think I can get the posthumous title of 'Wenzheng'?"

"Yes, it must be possible!" Sun Yuanqi replied decisively.

"That's good, that's good" The boss closed his eyes with satisfaction.  (To be continued. If you like this work, you are welcome to come to Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for recommendations and monthly votes. Your support is my biggest motivation.) (Remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com
