    Chapter 18

Song Ran saw his face clearly, and her tense nerves were torn apart in an instant.  Her hands and feet suddenly became weak, and tears welled up silently.  He supported her with one hand, and she tried her best to stand still.

There were constant gunshots in the alley, and they followed.

Li Zan lifted up the mask to cover his face again with one hand, pulled her up with the other hand and quickly turned into another alley.

The lane is narrow and crowded with houses on both sides.

Li Zan ran and scanned the house. When he saw a house with its windows closed, he immediately opened the window and picked up Song Ran and put her up without any explanation.

Song Ran understood and quickly jumped into the house.  Li Zan put his hands on the inner layer of the window sill and jumped into the house without touching the dust outside the window sill.

Song Ran immediately closed the window.

This house is a typical Dongguo desert dwelling, with small windows, thick walls, and a flat-roofed bunker that is as dark and cool as a bunker.  The valuable furniture and decorations in the house have long been emptied.

As soon as the two of them entered the house, the footsteps of searchers could be heard outside the window.

Song Ran was scared and wanted to climb the stairs to escape.  As soon as she took a step forward, Li Zan pulled her back and pressed her against the wall. He quickly covered her mouth with his big hand, and he also stepped forward and pressed her against the wall.

The next second, a figure flashed past the window next to the two of them.  A dark and long shadow slanted into the room, slowly sliding across the light and shadow outline outlined by the window edge on the floor.

Li Zan gritted his teeth and unconsciously pressed Song Ran tighter.

Song Ran¡¯s heart was beating wildly and she tried her best to hold her breath.  At this moment, she was afraid to even hear her own breathing.

Several more figures passed by the window, going back and forth.

The group of people lost sight of their target and gathered near the window, cursing in Eastern languages.  Although I couldn't understand the content, I could distinguish the madly gathering anger inside.

Separated by a wall, Song Ran didn't even dare to breathe, and hot and cold sweat poured down her body.  She raised her eyes to look at Li Zan. He was very close to her, and his chin was almost touching her forehead.

His temples were tense; above the mask, only his striking eyebrows were exposed, staring at the window without blinking, his eyes as sharp as an eagle.  There was a rifle stuck between two points and one line on the right palm and right arm, and veins popped out on the back of the hand.

After the person outside the window cursed angrily.  Suddenly, someone said something in the direction of the window.  A figure approached the window and raised his hand to push it open.

Song Ran stared at Li Zan with wide eyes; but he stared at the hand, and the right hand holding the gun slowly raised; a ruthless aura exuded from his whole body, and a sense of oppression came from top to bottom.

Just when the man was about to open the window, someone said something.  The man touched the ashes on the window sill and replied.  Song Ran then remembered that Li Zan did not move the dust on the window sill when he entered the house just now.

The people outside judged that there would be no one in the house, so they turned around and left.  At this time, there was a sudden gunshot, and a figure fell to the ground on the edge of the window.

Anti-government forces came after him and started fighting with terrorist organizations again.

The people outside immediately raised their guns to respond to the enemy, and the two sides fell into a fierce battle, with bullets flying everywhere.  Several of them hit the window, causing the glass to explode and fly.

Li Zan instantly lowered his head towards her shoulder and covered her with his body, blocking the glass shards flying at high speed.

The man¡¯s cheek was pressed tightly against the side of her face, and through the not-so-thick mask, his rapid and wet breath seeped out of the cotton cloth, and was lifted from the side of her face into her ears like wet feathers.

But within just a second, he turned his head.  Although he still kept his head down, his eyes were pointed out the window, paying close attention to the movements outside, not daring to relax in the slightest.

Song Ran stared blankly, her heart beating out of control.  She was held tightly in his arms, she could hear the strong beating heartbeat in his chest, and could smell the hot sweat in his collar.  She was trembling inexplicably, whether it was because of fear or something else.

And his hand was still covering her mouth, smelling of male sweat and gun smoke.

She then remembered that the two bullets that came from a high place were shot by him.

    He saved her again.

They stayed close to each other and stood in the cool, dark corner for more than ten minutes.

The fighting outside finally subsided, and both groups of people seemed to have suffered heavy losses and evacuated separately.

It was not until the world was quiet, so quiet that no sound could be heard, that Song Ran felt an obvious and slow rise and fall in his chest - he finally breathed a sigh of relief.

He slowly raised his head, loosened his hand covering her mouth, and took a step or two back to increase the distance between him and her.

Song Ran¡¯s face was already blood red, and she hurriedly??Sit down and look at the horizon.

The afternoon sun was shining brightly, without a trace of wind.

The two of them were sitting in the car, one high and one low, but their hearts were exceptionally calm and peaceful.

The world is silent and vast.  They wait.

After sitting for a while, Song Ranhu said: "Now that I think about it, it's really amazing. A few years ago, I would never have imagined that I would be driving on a shabby concrete road in a war-torn country. Halfway through my escape,  We also parked the car and sat in the car to watch the mirage.¡±

Li Zan hugged one knee and looked down at her: "You never thought you would be a reporter at that time?"

"No. I thought I would work in a history museum. But now, I think being a reporter is also very good. I can record many things. Maybe one day, I will record history by accident."

"I don't think we need to wait for a day. Everyone in this world is a part of history." Li Zan said, "You, me, everyone here is. Even if you can't remember it with paper or pen, this piece of history is part of history."  The land remembers too.¡±

Hearing this, Song Ran tilted her head to look at him.  He sat on the high roof of the car and looked at the sky and earth in the distance.  When he said this, he seemed to be yearning for something, and there was indescribable tenderness and affection in his eyes.

She suddenly felt it very clearly, feeling some kind of deep love for life, or for all living things.

She suddenly felt gentle and silent in her heart.

She looked into the distance again and said, "What about you? Have you wanted to be a soldier since you were a child?"

    "Yeah." He nodded.

    "Why?"

    "Remember the flood in 1998?"

Song Ran said: "Which child in our province will not remember? A soldier saved you?"

He smiled and shook his head: "My family lives in Jiangcheng, so it's okay. But I've seen a lot."

Song Ran nodded, indicating that he understood.

"Look!" Li Zan pointed to the horizon with his chin, reminding her.

As expected, the large olive grove began to slowly disappear.  Like paper soaked by water droplets, after the water evaporates, it slowly shrinks toward the center.

The two of them did not speak anymore. They were silent and quiet, staring at the slowly disappearing white olive groves on the horizon without blinking, as if they wanted to remember the scenery and mood of this moment in their hearts.

The forest became smaller and smaller, and gradually, only one olive tree was left, standing alone and stubbornly in the wilderness.  Like the most silent watch over this land.

Song Ran suddenly said: "Can a mirage make a wish?"

Li Zan chuckled: "This is not a shooting star."

Song Ran: "But I think everything given by nature can make a wish."

After the words fell, the two of them were quiet for a moment, and suddenly said in unison:

"Then I hope there will be world peace."

    "My wish is world peace."

They looked at the horizon, hearing each other's voices blending with their own, and couldn't help but smile slightly.  They didn't look at each other, but really looked at the white olive tree, until it melted into the air little by little and disappeared without a trace.

In the end, only the deserted sandy plains and the blue sky without any impurities were left.

It was as if the grand scene he and she had just seen had never existed before.  (Remember the website address: www.hlnovel.com
