¡ª¡ªOn Fang Yuan and his novel creation

    Liu Yudong

The first time I read Fang Yuan's novel was in the "Zhong Shan" magazine more than ten years ago. The name of the novel was "The Wall Has Ears".  At that time, the name Fang Yuan was still unfamiliar to me, but I was particularly impressed by this novella, which wrote about the living conditions and emotional state of Jinan people.  True, accurate and vivid, it is amazing to read.  At that time, two of my friends lived in exactly the kind of conjoined rooms described in Fang Yuan's novels. Like the protagonists in the novels, my friends were troubled, suffering, in love, and living.

"The Wall Has Ears" reminds me of Fang Yuan.  Later, I read several novellas by Fang Yuan in "Everybody", "The Great Wall", "Novelist" and other publications.  Without exception, Fang Yuan's novels are not only urban themes, but also mostly set in Jinan.  In Shandong, works that can continue to create urban themes and persistently use a city as the object of description must be "different", and this "different" must belong to Fang Yuan.

Fang Yuan is also a journalist. The influence of urban changes and the accumulation of his own life, in addition to providing materials for writers, undoubtedly had a strong influence and inspiration on his creative tendencies.  In the different transformations of cities and spaces, Fang Yuan used his experience and works to evoke people's lingering feelings and let us look again at the daily life that we have neglected.  Here, I would like to emphasize one point. We all know that Shandong has a rich cultural tradition and cultural accumulation. The characteristics of Shandong writers are thick, grand, and pay attention to the depth of thought, especially the creation of rural themes.  Location.  The creation of modern urban themes is weak, but at the same time, with the development of urbanization, a city needs its own urban culture, and urban literature should play an important role in it. It is a city's "soft power".  Fang Yuan¡¯s novel creations, whether it is the collection of novels "Looking for a Lover", or the novels "Transferring Love" and "Who Will Love Me", are all set in the city of Jinan, and all of them are written about the emotions and situations of Jinan people.  and real life.  Whether they are journalists, advertisers, column producers, medical workers, or nouveau riche, Fang Yuan has given a true description of their inner emotional world.  And pursuit, dream and loss, tenacity and cowardice, this is what makes Fang Yuan valuable and unique.  He always has bright eyes, gazing affectionately into the depths of the city.

Later, I got to know Fang Yuan and gradually became familiar with him. I have a deeper understanding of Fang Yuan.  Fang Yuan is straightforward, temperamental, and humorous. His personality is extroverted. It seems that everything is easy, but only for literature, Fang Yuan has always held a sincere and humble heart.  There is an open space in his heart, where his soul can be relaxed, stretched, and purified. It is a place that truly belongs to him.  I once told my friends that Fang Yuan is a truly low-key person, and this low-key comes from his devotion to literature.  For many years, no matter what kind of work he is engaged in, and regardless of the ebb and flow of the literary world itself, Fang Yuan has been creating silently.  His eyes were deeply focused on the men and women in the city.  The world of mortals is rolling and the sea is changing. In the face of material and lust, he presents human nature in front of readers like peeling corn.  His novels show a modern society full of desires, and write about the disintegration of ideals and love in the process of collision with real life.  His writing is fluent in texture, accurate in character appearance, character and language, and concise and clear in structure.  Fang Yuan has always had his own creative direction and writing standpoint. I hope he will continue to dig along this clear track, advancing to the depths and the darkest areas of human nature.

Fang Yuan was born in a scholarly family.  His father is a playwright and has won several "Flying Apsaras Awards".  Therefore, Fang Yuan's interest in literature formed naturally, and he had such an environment and atmosphere since he was a child.  Fang Yuan spent his childhood in the countryside of Laizhou, his hometown, and did not return to Jinan until he was in high school. This experience had a great influence on him. Fang Yuan has always cherished it, and he is not willing to take it out lightly.  In fact, he was brewing and improving all the time.  Chatting together some time ago, he told me that he had the urge to show this life experience.  I have a hunch that Fang Yuan's novels may change in the future.  However, no matter what, I can't easily give up on the city-themed novels I have been running for many years.  Maybe I was worrying too much. In the second issue of "Times Literature" this year, I read Fang Yuan's novella "Love in the Door".  The previous creative style is still a novel that starts from daily life and reveals the hidden emotions in the hearts of urban people.

These do not seem to be important, what is important is Fang Yuan's attitude towards literature.  "Literature to me is a hobby and a sustenance." Indeed, whether it is an English teacher after graduating from university, or??Worked as an editor and reporter for many years, his career has never been related to literature, and to a certain extent, reality does not allow him to write novels.  But since publishing his first novel in 1984, Fang Yuan has never stopped writing.  I write prose and essays when I am busy at work, and write novels when I have a whole block of time.  Over the past ten years, Fang Yuan has made remarkable achievements and attracted attention. He has published more than one million words of various literary works, and many of his works have been included in various anthologies and annual anthologies.

Chatting with Fang Yuan, the time passed quickly. He spoke frankly and calmly, and was humorous, but what flashed in his eyes was his dedication and firmness to literature.

"After the age of forty, I realized that what I can't give up the most is literature. After the age of forty, I realized that what I will devote my life to is literature As long as I live, the lamp of literature will last forever."  Will never go out in my heart."

    This is Fang Yuan.
