    The first man in Rome

    1. The author of the famous book "The Thorn Bird" and Australian national treasure writer Colleen McCullough's historical novel masterpiece

    2. Present the turbulent history of ancient Rome with the delicate and vivid brushwork of the novelist, reproduce the stage of giants such as Marius and Caesar, study the historical background in detail, and win the honor of doctor of history for the author with fictional works

"The First Man in Rome" is the first three volumes of the historical novel series "Roman Masters" by the famous Australian writer Colleen McCullough.  This set of novels describes the most turbulent history of ancient Rome, in which countless historical giants are the protagonists: Marius, Sulla, Caesar, and Pompey.

The historical materials that have been handed down to the present are intermittent about the history of ancient Rome, but Colleen McCullough cleverly connects history into vivid stories through novel techniques.  The historical rigor of the novel has been recognized by the academic community. The University of Melbourne in Australia awarded the author the honorary title of Doctor of History for this set of books, which also made this set of novels a good story¡ª¡ª

Because of "The Thorn Bird", I have always had a good impression of the author Colin McCullough. I entered her complete works in the first half of the year. When I recommended physical books, I talked about her "Sweet Misery" and "Miss Bennet's  "Self-Reliance", the evaluation at the time was that the writing was okay, but it was not as good as her "The Thorn Bird".  In the morning, I was a little disappointed with the novel because of the article about the Republic of China, so I went to read the physical book, and finished reading "The First Man in Rome" in one sitting. It is very well written, and it is the fourth five-star novel this year.

Next, turn on the bragging mode:

First of all, the names of Romans are very difficult to remember, such as Quintus Caecilius Metellus, Servius Sulpicius Galba, I can¡¯t find so many names without looking carefully  Just for two people.  Moreover, there are three main protagonists in the first book, the grandfathers of Marius, Sulla and Caesar, plus their respective families and opponents, there are many characters on the scene.  But the author is a real master, so many characters appearing on the stage, so hard to remember the names, because of her extremely wonderful characterization, they are all easy to remember.

In the characters, we mainly talk about Sura. The author used the eyes of outsiders to compare his appearance to Apollo, the sun god, but he didn¡¯t really impress me. But soon, Sura¡¯s first official appearance was enough.  Giving a sense of his charisma, he wakes up in a large bed with his stepmother on the right and his mistress on the left.  ¡ª¡ªWow, so good at playing!  ¡ª¡ªHe was unmoved, thinking about his same-sex lover¡ªhuh?  pair?  same?  ¡ª¡ªrecalling the experience of being kidnapped and imprisoned when I was young¡ª¡ª?  ?  ?

Sura recalled her emotional experience without emotion at all, and laughed at these lovers in her heart, and the next step was to attend the banquet.  Dress up as Medusa with a wig made of live snakes.  He came to the banquet just to find his lover, and he thought he was very cautious, but because of Sura's appearance, he attracted everyone's attention. As soon as he got into a fire with his lover Tianlei, other lovers started to fight each other.

He watched his lovers icily, and left.

The rest of the people looked at each other and began to cry loudly, not for themselves but for Sura.  Although they don't know exactly what's going on.

"The truth of the matter is that Sulla is thirty years old today, but he has been living under a mask. For thirty years he has lived in a world full of drunkards, beggars, mummers, whores, quack doctors, and freedmen.  , but this is not his world at all.¡±

Then the author wrote about the history of his family's glory and downfall. I found that a beautiful and downtrodden aristocrat's taste of being depraved and unwilling to play with the world to mock the world is so charming, beautiful and miserable.

He later killed two lovers and one of their blood relatives, inherited their inheritance and married the noble daughter (Aunt Caesar) who was fascinated by him, and reached the pinnacle of life.

Black Widow, a sex-transformed version, everyone, don¡¯t be afraid of BG being corrupted. First of all, there is an essential difference between the physical writing and the logic of the novel, and the point is that Sura is heartless, cold-blooded, and ruthless. She doesn¡¯t love anyone but herself.  Character design, he doesn't love men and women, "Sura just can't classify his feelings for anyone as love. Love is too strange to Sura, it only happens to others. He thinks this kind of emotion is too much.  Weird, full of fantasy and disillusionment, sometimes noble and elegant, sometimes stupid, sometimes right and wrong. He couldn't find this kind of emotion in himself, mainly because he believed that love would make people lose basic common sense, self-preservation and  Smart and sensible."

Aunt Caesar went on a hunger strike for him and wrote to him: "The Romans have always relied on letters, which are our spiritual food. My life is also extended by writing to you. Since you refuse to give me the food I most desire,  What else does food mean to me?"

This ruthless person sees this infatuation arise. With the exception of the judge, everyone is subject to the veto power.

    3. Construction officer, responsible for maintaining and repairing public buildings, managing the market, responsible for food transportation, public games and festivals, this position is not necessary for official career experience, but it provides many opportunities for the wealthy to conduct publicity and canvassing, and the preparation costs  Especially when it comes to huge games.  The builder must pay out of his own pocket when organizing the event.

    4. Triumph Marshal refers to the triumphant general in Rome¡¯s foreign wars. After the Roman army won a great victory, the soldiers of the army will elect their commander as the ¡°Triumph Marshal¡±, and after the verification and approval of the Senate, they can hold a ¡°Military Merit Award¡± for him.  Triumph".

    5. Women in ancient Rome generally had only one name, which was actually the feminine form of their father's clan name. However, since the end of the Republic, women's names began to increase, and the most common one was the feminine form of their father's family name as the second name.

    6. The restaurant in ancient Rome usually had three reclining chairs, one in the middle and two left and right arranged in a horseshoe shape. On the reclining chair in the middle, the left side is the owner's seat, and the right side is the most distinguished guest's seat.  When dining, the man lies sideways and rests on the recliner with his elbows, and the woman generally sits on the seat opposite the man.

    7. Holy wheat cake wedding, the oldest and most sacred wedding ceremony in ancient Rome. At first, only nobles could hold it. After marriage, it is almost impossible to divorce. There are priests present at the wedding, and the bride will send a piece of cake made of wheat.  And eat this barley cake with the groom in the subsequent ceremony.

    8. Virgin of Vesta, a priestess who served the god Vesta in ancient Rome.  They are responsible for guarding and tending the fire in the hearth of the Vesta Temple to ensure that the fire will not be extinguished.  There were initially 4 virgins of Vesta, and later 6, and the chief priest selected girls aged 6-10 from noble families.  Supported by the state, they must serve the temple for at least 30 years, and they can come out to get married after the expiration of the period.  But they usually chose to serve for life, and if they violated their chastity vows during their service, they were buried alive.  Vestal virgins are very respected, and they are the only Roman women who enjoy the right to independently manage property. Consuls must give way when they meet them.  (such as a will) to them for safekeeping.

    9. Curia, the electoral unit of ancient Rome, the Romans were initially divided into 30 curia (constituencies), 10 for each of the three primitive tribes.  Kurias are the basis of political and military organization and people vote in their Kurias.

    10. In the criminal law of ancient Rome, sex was not considered a form of punishment. Prison was a coercive method for those who did not obey the orders of the administrator. The time of sex was not long.  Prisons are also used to detain criminals charged in criminal trials or sentenced but awaiting execution.

    11. Grass crown, the highest honor medal of the ancient Roman army, is woven from weeds picked from the battlefield. It is only awarded to those who saved a legion or ended a war. According to historical records, only eight people have ever won the grass crown.  One is Sura.

    12. The ancient Romans believed that drinking milk was uncivilized, and milk was generally used to make cheese or for medical purposes.

    13. When the Romans abolished the monarchy, they also abolished the concept of the state supporting the army. Therefore, when recruiting the army, only those who were able to purchase weapons and equipment were recruited.

As for the introductions of Marius, Sulla, and Grandpa Caesar, you don¡¯t need to read them, because the author has a lot of reasonable YY elements, and they are not based on history. For example, I searched for Sulla and Ulila for a long time and I didn¡¯t find Sulla.  The first wife was of the Caesar family.  Of course, some of the lovers are still true.  (Remember the site URL: www.hlnovel.com
