Text Chapter 64: The army comes out and the world is in turmoil

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

Datang's war preparations have been completed, everything is ready, and the expedition is imminent. Du Rui has become more and more busy during this period. He has to spend most of his time in the military camp. The army is about to go out. A few days before the expedition.  Today is the busiest day for the generals. It involves 400,000 people and no one dares to be careless.

Even after the army went out for battle, no one dared to slack off at all. This was true for coaches like Du Rui, and the same for other leading generals. Perhaps they could only relax on the day when the army returned home in triumph and all military affairs were handed over.

It was not the first time that Du Rui led an army on an expedition, but he shouldered important responsibilities and did not dare to be careless. Therefore, these days, he spent most of his time in the military camp and rarely went back to his home.

Du Rui has not left Chang'an, but he has not appeared in the mansion most of the time. His wives and concubines are not happy, especially Princess Ankang and Princess Jinyang, but they have no choice but to stay in Du Rui's house.  Occasionally when I come back, I just complain a lot.

Seeing the resentful eyes of his wives and concubines, Du Rui felt quite guilty. He could only use the rare time when he returned home to spend more time with them, talk to them, give them some practical comfort, and give more to his children.  A little bit of fatherly love.

Because he had to take care of too many people, Du Rui put in too much energy and physical strength, which also made him a little tired. Sometimes he even regretted that the burden he had placed on himself was too heavy, but  Have no idea!

The great trust of two generations of emperors, throughout the ages, who has ever had such favor!  ?

Zhou Gong didn¡¯t pass it, Huo Guang didn¡¯t pass it, and Zhuge Liang didn¡¯t pass it either.

The more you shoulder, the heavier the burden. Du Rui now fully understands what it means to have a responsibility that is heavier than Mount Tai.

The day before the expedition, Du Rui and other major generals could return home to say goodbye to their families. Du Rui also used practical actions to say goodbye to his wives and concubines. Of course, the farewell scene was very absurd. He could be said to have collapsed in the middle of a group of women from exhaustion.  .

"A woman is like a wolf at thirty and a tiger at forty. It is indeed true."  Fortunately, the army is finally about to go into battle, and Du Rui is "temporarily" relieved!

We went out for the election on a sunny day, in front of Chengtian Gate.

The people of Chang'an City arrived early. They knew that the Tang Empire's new round of conquest of the world was about to begin again. Although the Tang Dynasty had already sounded the clarion call for war when Xue Rengui went west to conquer Egypt, Du Rui  It's still different to personally lead an army on an expedition.

It¡¯s like in the future, two blockbusters compete for the summer slot at the same time, one starring Huang Bo, the other starring Andy Lau, Chow Yun-fat, and Stephen Chow. Although they are all movie kings, people¡¯s expectations are definitely different.

Although Xue Rengui is also a famous general, compared with Du Rui, he is still inferior.

    Who is Du Rui?

The God of War of the Tang Dynasty!

Synonymous with conquering everything and being invincible.

The people of Chang'an all remember that when the Tang army was defeated at Talas, the Western Region was shaken, and almost even Chang'an was exposed to the front of the Dashi. At the critical moment, it was Du Rui who turned the tide and not only drove the Dashi out of the Western Regions, but also  It is to enter Central Asia in one fell swoop.

So, their expectations for Du Rui are much higher and they are more confident.

They are all looking forward to an upcoming victory. Speaking of which, they are more confident than the coach Du Rui. They have already booked victory before the war begins.

Emperor Li Xian of the Tang Dynasty had appeared on the tower of Chengtian Gate early. He would personally preside over the grand expedition ceremony. The future queen, Du Rui's beloved daughter Du Taiping, was standing next to Li Xian. Their marriage had been decided.  Down, on the day Du Rui returned to the court in victory.

In addition, the important ministers of the DPRK, the casual officials who became official officials, and Qin Shu, the generals who went on expeditions, also participated in the ceremony.

There was an autumn rain just a few days ago, and the weather gradually became a little cold, even under the warm sunshine.  But on such a cold day, it was still very lively outside Chengtianmen. Tens of thousands of soldiers lined up neatly in the large square outside Chengtianmen.  There were hundreds of thousands of family members of the generals who came to see him off, as well as civilians watching the fun. Looking around, countless battle flags were flying, and there were black people and horses everywhere, and the sound of gongs and drums was deafening.

The majestic "The Music of the King of Qin Breaking the Formation" was played over and over again, and many soldiers sang along, and the crowd was excited.  Men in the Tang Dynasty should go to the frontiers, fight for the country, die on the battlefield, and be shrouded in horse leather. That is the destination of a man. Now that they are about to go to war, they can't help but feel excited.

Completely different from the high spirits of the generals who went on the expedition, the family members who saw them off all had sad faces, including some of the wives, concubines, and children of the generals who went on the expedition., weeping constantly there.

"War always kills people. No one knows whether the relatives who are still alive and running in front of them during this expedition can come back safely. The meeting at this time may very well be the last time in this life.

Poorless and the bone of the river, still a deep girlfriend dreaming!

Looking at the family members of the generals who were out there crying more than anyone else, Du Rui couldn't help but think of these two poems, which were really unpleasant.  What made him even more uncomfortable was that he saw his wives, concubines and children also mourning and crying there. As the general manager of the Western Expeditionary Army, he stood at the front of the army and could clearly see most of the people seeing off the expedition nearby.  The sadness of the general's family members, including his own relatives, would not cause him too much sadness, but his own family's behavior still made him feel depressed.

Du Xuezheng and others who gathered behind Du Rui couldn't help but have red eyes, but they didn't want to show their cowardly side when they were around Du Rui.

    ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????¡

Among them, the one who opposed the most fiercely was Baochai, who was just as opposed to leaving Du Xuewu in Australia: "My husband is really so cruel. Xuezheng and the others are young, how can they endure such suffering? If my husband really wants to take care of him,  When his parents and children go to the battlefield, they take Xueyi and Xuezhen with them. They are brothers and can enjoy all the happiness and wealth in Chang'an, but it makes no sense to ask the younger brothers to go to the battlefield and fight for a narrow escape!"

Du Rui just retorted, leaving Baochai speechless: "Because they are my sons, they must follow me as their father to fight for their lives. They are noble sons, and they have been rich in clothing and food since they were young.  Enjoying unimaginable glory and wealth, could it be that because of this, their lives are more valuable than those of ordinary people? They gained more in the Tang Dynasty, and naturally they have to make a comeback!"

"Tiger poison will not eat its seeds!"

Du Rui's attitude towards his children may be a bit harsh, but the ancients could do it by forgetting selfish interests, but he couldn't do it.

When reading history in his previous life, Du Rui remembered this story: During the Spring and Autumn Period, a place called Nanyang in Jin State was short of a county magistrate. Duke Ping of Jin went to ask Qi Huangyang, the doctor at the time, and said: "Nanyang County is short of a county magistrate. Look,  Who should be sent as this official?"

Qi Huangyang replied without hesitation: "Ask Jiehu. He is a fair man. He is the most suitable to be the county magistrate there. He will definitely be able to do the job!"

Duke Ping of Jin asked him in surprise: "Isn't Jiehu your enemy? Why do you still recommend him?"

Qi Huangyang smiled and said: "You only asked me who is qualified and who is most suitable to be the county magistrate of Nanyang. You didn't ask me whether Jiehu is my enemy! I only have a personal grudge against him and cannot  To cover up his talent."

Duke Ping of Jin felt that what he said was very reasonable and that Xie Hu was indeed a good person, so he sent Xie Hu to Nanyang County to take up his post.  After Jie Hu took office, he was indeed very capable of governance and did a lot of good things for the people there. Everyone praised him.

After a while, Duke Ping of Jin asked Qi Huangyang again: "There is a lack of a judge in the court now. Who can be qualified for this position?"

Qi Huangyang said without hesitation: "Qi Wu can hold this position."

Duke Ping of Jin became strange again and asked: "Isn't Qi Wu your son? How do you recommend your son? Aren't you afraid of others gossiping?"

Qi Huangyang said: "But you only asked me who is qualified for the position of judge, so I recommended him; you didn't ask me if Qi Wu is my son!"

Duke Ping of Jin was very satisfied with Qi Huangyang's answer, so he sent Qi Wu to be the judge.  Qi Wu became a judge, and he was able to enforce the law fairly and did many good things for people. He was very popular and loved by people.

After Confucius heard these two stories, he praised Qi Huangyang very much.

Confucius said: "What Qi Huangyang said is so good! When he recommends talents, he uses talent as a criterion. He does not recommend him because he is his enemy and is biased; nor does he recommend him because he is his son and is afraid of others.  After discussing it, I don¡¯t recommend him. Only people like Qi Huangyang can say that they ¡®forget the public and forget their own interests¡¯!¡±

The moral courage to recommend talents and see only justice and ignore enemies is a basic spirit that everyone in the country and society must cultivate.  Only by being able to be "public" can we get rid of the "private", and only by being able to get rid of the private can we trust each other. This is the fundamental principle of blocking the source of chaos.

Du Rui knows that when a dynasty has been at peace for a long time, this self-forgetting spirit can easily be gradually forgotten, and then some things will happen, such as rocket cadres, nepotism promotion incidents, and some people will do so under the guise of "property".  Under the banner of "virtuous people should not avoid relatives", we should promote "small circles"??, you use my people, I use your people, take care of each other, and everyone is happy. Some "rocket-style cadres" are related to certain leading officials upon investigation, which will inevitably make the good stories tarnished and the good talk covered in dust.

In Du Rui¡¯s view, the key to whether ¡°rewarding virtuous people and not avoiding relatives¡± can be established lies in the word ¡°gong¡± in Confucius. Justice and injustice are judged by superiority and inferiority.

Bao Zheng is a selfless man and does not seek personal gain.  He lived a frugal life. Even after becoming an official and gaining status, his food, clothing, housing, transportation and living habits were similar to those of ordinary people.  Bao Zheng once wrote a family motto and engraved it on the wall of his home.

The full text of the family motto is: "The descendants of future generations of officials who commit corruption and abuse shall not be allowed to return to their own family. After their death, they shall not be buried in a big tomb. If they do not follow my ambitions, they will not be my descendants."

In other words, Bao Zheng strictly requires future generations not to be greedy or bully the people. If someone does not do this, then he is not a descendant of the Bao family and will not be buried in the ancestral grave of the Bao family.

This famous family motto reflects Bao Zheng¡¯s noble sentiments of not seeking the benefit of his family.  This kind of sentiment was not deliberately done by Bao Zheng to show that he was noble, but was his code of conduct throughout his life.

As early as when he was an official in his hometown of Luzhou, Bao Zheng was known for his selflessness and his reputation far and wide.  Bao Zheng became the official of his parents, and his relatives in the village were very happy, thinking that they had a backer from now on.  However, the selfless Bao Zheng acts impartially. Even if his relatives break the law, he enforces the law like a mountain.  In this way, Bao Qingtian's reputation was greatly shocked. After Bao Zheng's death, his reputation spread far and wide.

There is another story. During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, there was a leader of the Mohist school named Feizhuan who settled in the State of Qin. His son committed murder and was arrested.

King Qin Hui Wang said to someone: "Sir, you are old and you have no other sons. I have already issued an order to pardon your son, but you must obey me on this matter!"

Fu Zhao replied: "The Mohist law says: 'Whoever kills will pay with his life, and whoever injures others will be sentenced.' Only in this way can we prohibit killing and injuring others. Prohibition of killing is a major matter in the world. Although Your Majesty is merciful and does not kill my son, I have to obey it.  Mohist laws."

Because Fu Zhao was unwilling to accept the pardon from King Qin Hui, his son was executed.  Later, someone praised him and said: "Everyone loves his son, but Fu Zhao was able to kill his son in accordance with the law regardless of personal feelings. It can be said to be selfless."

No matter how small the country's affairs are, they are still big things; no matter how big your own affairs are, they are still small things.

"It's not that Du Rui doesn't cherish his children, nor is he a truly selfless saint. He asked Du Xuezheng to join the army without any brothers and be involved in dangerous situations. Could it be that he was really willing in his heart?

" Du Rui just doesn't want to ask others to be "selfless and selfless for the sake of public service" while he does something else. How can he ask others then? If everyone uses power for personal gain, wouldn't the world be in chaos?

" Du Xuezheng and others joined the officialdom. Since they have enjoyed the benefits brought by their rights, they naturally have to pay obligations. This is axiom.

Princess Ankang seemed to cry more sadly than anyone else, which made people feel heartbroken. Du Rui knew that she was worried about herself and that Du Xuezheng had no brothers. Princess Runan was quite strong and comforted her sister from time to time.

" Du Rui apologized deeply to his many wives and concubines. Because he was busy with too many things, he didn't even spend time with them properly before setting off for the expedition.

At this moment, Du Rui could only apologize endlessly, saying that after returning from the expedition, he would definitely take time to accompany them, and asked them not to come to see her off on the day of the expedition to avoid being sad.  But a group of darling wives and concubines still came and cried bitterly, which made Du Rui feel even more apologetic.

Sons and daughters love each other long while heroes are short-tempered. Du Rui knew that he could not cut off his tender feelings for these women, so he could only endure not to look at them.

Amid the noise of gongs and drums, Li Xian walked down the tower and appeared in front of everyone on foot. Du Rui quickly led the generals to line up neatly to welcome the emperor's arrival.

The ceremony officially began, and Li Xian led the ministers and generals who were about to go on an expedition to the altar.

Sacrifice to the heaven, to the earth, to the ancestral temple, then to the flag, to the tailao to sacrifice, to paint the military flag and war drum with blood, and then to the sun, including the direction the march will pass and the gods of mountains and rivers, which means that from now on, we can march forward through mountains and rivers.

Du Rui has participated in many such expedition ceremonies, but today he found that the feeling this time was completely different, and it seemed particularly grand. Du Rui could also understand Li Xian's thoughts, and he went on a large-scale western expedition to wipe out Dashi.  What an important event it is. Since the beginning of the Hongwu Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty has not shown its illustrious martial arts. If this western expedition can be won, Li's image as a wise and promising king can be established.

Like Li Chengqian at the time, Li Xian also felt that he was living under the light of his father and ancestors, especially his great grandfather Emperor Taizong, who was simply a man who could make? The existence of looking up.

When the Tang Dynasty was founded, it was the peak period of division and melee among various military factions.  If Emperor Taizong's military exploits before the establishment of the Tang Dynasty were not very significant, then after the establishment of the Tang Dynasty, his military exploits in unifying the country were unmatched.

After Emperor Gaozu proclaimed himself emperor, it was inconvenient for him to personally conquer the country, and Li Jiancheng, the hidden prince at that time, also had to assist Gaozu in handling government affairs in Chang'an. In this way, pacifying all forces and unifying the country became an unshirkable responsibility for Emperor Taizong, who was still the King of Qin at the time.

Emperor Taizong, who was in his twenties, bravely shouldered this heavy responsibility and spent more than ten years completing this arduous task of unifying the war.

Emperor Taizong¡¯s unification war consisted of three parts: one was to pacify Xue Ju and his son, the other was to defeat Liu Wuzhou, and the third was to defeat Wang Shichong and Dou Jiande.

In 617 AD, Xue Ju, a wealthy man from Jincheng County, led an army of 100,000 to invade Weishui, attack Fufeng, and compete with Emperor Gaozu for Guanzhong.  Emperor Gaozu ordered Emperor Taizong to fight with Xue Ju in Fufeng, beheading more than 10,000 people and defeating Xue Ju. This expanded Tang's power to the Longyou area and further stabilized the situation in Guanzhong.

In June of the second year, Emperor Gaozu appointed Emperor Taizong as Marshal of the Western Campaign and continued his campaign against Xue Ju.  In July, he fought with Xue Ju in Jingzhou, because at that time Emperor Taizong was suffering from malaria and was recuperating in the army, and his generals were eager for a decisive battle.  Due to insufficient preparation for the war, he was attacked by Xue Ju and returned with a huge defeat.

In August, after Xue Ju died, his son Xue Rengao led the army to invade.  Emperor Taizong continued his expedition. He first held the line for sixty days and did not allow his men to fight. He also ordered: "Anyone who dares to speak out in battle will be killed!"

This is mainly to restore the morale of your own army and at the same time demoralize the enemy.  When the time was right, Emperor Taizong ordered his generals to lure the enemy deep, and then mobilize the entire army to annihilate them.  In the battle of Qianshuiyuan, the enemy army was greatly defeated. As a result, Xue Rengao surrendered and the Longyou area was declared pacified.

In 619 AD, Liu Wuzhou, with the support of the Turks, went south on a large scale and attacked Bingzhou, which was Taiyuan, the place where the dragons of the Tang Dynasty traveled.  Li Yuanji, the general manager of Bingzhou, could not bear it and fled back to Chang'an.  As a result, Jinzhou and other places were also lost, and the Guanzhong area was shaken.

Gaozu wanted to give up this area east of Hedong, but Emperor Taizong was firmly opposed. He believed that Hedong was a rich land, an important support for the capital, and a place to raise troops, so he could not give up and was willing to lead troops to take it back.

Emperor Gaozu then ordered Emperor Taizong to lead the army on an expedition. In November, Emperor Taizong took advantage of the freezing opportunity of the Yellow River to successfully cross the river, and then used the tactic of "strengthening the wall to defeat the sharp" to confront Liu Wuzhou's general Song Jingang.

Emperor Taizong stood firm to demoralize the enemy and waited for action, because he knew that if the enemy's troops penetrated deeply, they would be short of food and grass.  In February of the following year, when Song Jingang's army was short of food and grass, he defeated the enemy in Jiexiu City, and Liu Wuzhou also abandoned Taiyuan and fled north.  At this point, the northeastern part of Guanzhong was also declared stable.

In 618, after the news of the murder of Emperor Sui Yang reached Luoyang, the guard Wang Shichong supported the Yue King Yang Tong to proclaim himself emperor and changed the Yuan Dynasty to Huangtai.  In April 619, Wang Shichong seized power, changed the country's name to Zheng, and separated the Kanto region.  In July of the next year, Emperor Taizong marched into Luoyang and began to pacify Wang Shichong.

From the completion of the siege of Luoyang in August of this year to February of the next year, although they often attacked the city day and night, they were unable to win because the city of Luoyang was strong.  The soldiers were eager to return home, but Emperor Taizong strengthened his will and encouraged the soldiers: "This time we are coming with a heavy army, we should do it once and for all. The states in the east have surrendered, leaving only Luoyang as an isolated city. Judging from the current situation, it is difficult to  No matter how much longer you hold on, your great work will be accomplished soon, so why do you have to give up and return without success?"

At Emperor Taizong¡¯s insistence, the generals expressed their willingness to fight to the end with him.

In this decisive battle, Emperor Taizong always took the lead. Once, he led 500 cavalry to inspect the terrain ahead, but was surrounded by enemy cavalry.  The enemy general Shan Xiongxin stood up to capture Emperor Taizong. Yuchi Jingde jumped out of his horse and stabbed Shan Xiongxin off his horse, covering Emperor Taizong and breaking out of the tight encirclement.

After that, it was the famous Battle of Hulao.  At the critical moment when Wang Shichong was besieged and about to be defeated, Dou Jiande of Hebei led 100,000 troops, claiming to be 300,000, and marched south to save Wang Shichong.  At that time, Dou Jiande claimed to be the King of Xia and occupied Hebei and Shandong.  At first, he was unwilling to rescue each other and just sat back and watched the dragon and tiger fight.  Later, seeing that Wang Shichong was at a disadvantage and about to be annihilated, he followed the advice of his subordinate Liu Bin and sent troops to rescue him, lest he himself would be alone and unable to escape the same fate after Wang Shichong's demise.

Dou Jiande initially wrote to Emperor Taizong, asking him to retreat to Tongguan and make peace.  Emperor Taizong flatly refused and began to plan how to deal with Dou Jiande.

Emperor Taizong's subordinates were divided into two factions. The faction led by Xue Shou believed that Wang Shichong was only short of food and grass. If he received relief, the outcome of the war would be difficult to predict.  While besieging Luoyang, Emperor Taizong should personally lead the elite cavalry to seize Hulao Pass.  After defeating Dou Jiande, Wang Shichong stopped attacking.Broken.

However, Qu Tutong and other generals opposed it. They believed that if they went to Hulao Pass, they would be attacked from both sides. They should retreat to Xin'an first and then look for opportunities to fight.

Emperor Taizong finally made the decision: "Wang Shichong has exhausted his food and grass, and has become disloyal both internally and externally. We should just sit back and collect the remaining profits without having to mobilize troops to attack. Dou Jiande, on the other hand, has arrogant soldiers and lazy soldiers. We must occupy Hulao and guard the dangerous place. Dou Jiande  If they want to fight me in a decisive battle, they will definitely win in one battle. If they cower and don't fight, Wang Shichong will be defeated within ten days. If we don't fight quickly now and let Dou Jiande occupy Hulao, then the cities that have just surrendered will not be able to  Guard, it will be difficult for our army to have the good opportunity to win now."

Emperor Taizong finally accepted Xue Shou's opinion. He ordered Qu Tutong and Qi King Li Yuanji to continue the siege of Luoyang, while he led 3,500 elite cavalry to rush to Hulao. The famous Battle of Hulao in history officially began.  .

Emperor Taizong led his troops to Hulao Pass and personally marched twenty miles eastward to reconnoiter the enemy's situation. Dou Jiande was unable to advance and had to build fortifications on the spot.  After that, Dou Jiande's army suffered several defeats in battles. The soldiers' homesickness for returning became increasingly severe, and the morale of the army began to weaken. The grain transport road was raided again, and General Zhang Qing was also captured.  At this time, his subordinates suggested crossing the river to attack Huaizhou, then heading west across the Taihang Mountains, taking advantage of the opportunity to capture Shangdang, and then go south to occupy the vast area east of Hedong. This would not only occupy territory to replenish troops, but also threaten Guanzhong, thus forcing the Tang army to retreat and save itself.  , the siege of Luoyang was broken without attack.  But Dou Jiande wanted to find a decisive battle with the Tang army and would not listen at all. Instead, he said that this was the opinion of a scholar.

In May, Emperor Taizong crossed the river and herded horses on the north bank of the Yellow River, leaving thousands of war horses behind to give Dou Jiande the illusion that he had run out of food and grass. He himself returned to Hulao at night.

Dou Jiande fell into the trap and thought he had an opportunity. He mobilized his entire army, lined up twenty miles and marched with drums beating, hoping to frighten the Tang army with his momentum.

Emperor Taizong climbed up to watch, and then said to his generals: "Dou Jiande crossed the dangerous pass and made a noise to advance. This is undisciplined. To form an array near the city is to despise our army. If we stand still, their courage will gradually fade and they will form an array."  After a long time, the soldiers will be hungry and tired, and will retreat without attacking. When we then take advantage of the momentum to pursue, we will be invincible."

As expected, at noon, Dou Jiande's army was hungry and thirsty because they had not started fighting. They began to fight for water. Many people sat on the ground, no longer in the same formation as at the beginning, and looked defeated.

Seeing that the time had come, Emperor Taizong ordered an attack. He had quietly driven his horses back. With a military order, the entire army rushed towards the enemy with an overwhelming force. Dou Jiande was defeated. He was also wounded by a gunshot and was captured by the Tang army on the way back.

When Dou Jiande was defeated, Wang Shichong of Luoyang was frightened. He wanted to break out but was opposed by the generals, so he had to surrender in Kaicheng.

After Dou Jiande was escorted to Chang'an, Li Yuan executed him. As a result, his generals rebelled again. Liu Heitai restored Dou Jiande's original area, and Emperor Taizong led troops to defeat him.

Emperor Taizong had his own set of strategies for commanding operations. Later generations summarized some experiences for him. From these experiences, we can see his extraordinary military talent.

First, a strong wall defeats a sharp one, this is what Du You summed up for him in "Tongdian".  In the battle of Qianshuiyuan, he used this tactic to defeat Liu Wuzhou.  The main content is to confront the enemy with a strong wall, engage in a protracted battle, hold back the enemy, and then look for opportunities to annihilate the enemy.

Second, it is to accurately utilize cavalry to counterattack behind enemy lines.  When the two armies are in a stalemate, the elite cavalry rushes into the enemy's formation. Especially when the enemy retreats, they use the cavalry to pursue them quickly and strive to annihilate them all without giving the enemy a chance to breathe and rest.  In the Battle of Hulao, when the battle was in full swing, Emperor Taizong led Qin Shubao and other generals to suddenly attack behind the enemy's formation, holding high flags and charging back and forth. Dou Jiande's army was immediately defeated when they saw it.

Third, pursue the enemy bravely.  When chasing Song Jingang's army, the Tang army marched 200 miles day and night. The soldiers were exhausted. Even the general manager Liu Hongji dissuaded him from resting before pursuing again. However, Emperor Taizong said: "Taking advantage of the victory to chase it is the only way to break the bamboo." Then he continued to pursue, and again  Destroy the enemy army.  If you rest and recuperate by yourself, you will give the enemy time to escape, leaving trouble for future sieges.

Fourth, conduct personal reconnaissance and deploy combat plans.  Emperor Taizong personally went to the frontier for reconnaissance every time he fought, and went deep into the vicinity of the enemy camp to obtain real intelligence.  Once, Emperor Taizong was surrounded by Wang Shichong's cavalry. When he came back from the siege, his face was covered with dust, and even the guards could not recognize him. Just as he was about to stop him, Emperor Taizong took off his armor, and then he recognized who it was.  .  The horse herding strategy used later in the decisive battle with Dou Jiande was a plan deployed after on-site reconnaissance.

There is also a lot of experience in other aspects, especially taking the lead when fighting, eating and walking with the soldiers during rest, sharing joys and sorrows, which plays a role in boosting morale, which is crucial to the victory of the battle.  While pursuing Song Jingang's army for the night, Emperor Taizong had not eaten for two days., the armor has not been removed for three days.  The soldiers were all tired and hungry, but there was only one sheep at that time. Emperor Taizong also wanted to eat with the soldiers. At this time, the soldiers were so grateful that they all competed for the lead in the pursuit.

Emperor Taizong's military talents emerged at the age of sixteen.  "New Book of Tang" records that Yang Guang, Emperor Yang Guang of the Sui Dynasty, who was patrolling the north, was attacked by the Turkic Shibi Khan and surrounded Yanmen. Thirty-nine of the forty-one cities fell. He had no choice but to write an edict and throw himself into the South.  I went to Fenshui, hoping that someone could come to the rescue.  Emperor Taizong, who was only sixteen years old, had just joined the army and was a subordinate of the garrison general Yun Dingxing.  On the basis of an accurate analysis of the situation between the enemy and ourselves, he made a reinforcement suggestion to Yun Dingxing: At present, the enemy is outnumbered and we are outnumbered, so it is not suitable to directly enter the battle. We can plant flags all over the day and beat the drums at night to form a large army without showing any force.  Suppress the situation to confuse the enemy.  The Turks were indeed fooled, and the siege of Yanmen was resolved without a fight.

This is exactly what Sun Tzu said in "The Art of War: Planning and Attack" as "the soldier who conquers the enemy without fighting".  A sixteen-year-old child who can use the military to such an extent is truly a military genius!

Being good at using the art of war is a distinctive feature of Emperor Taizong.  He always used a weak enemy to surprise and win by surprise, or used force to swallow up a weak enemy to ensure victory. His military ability of repeatedly accomplishing extraordinary feats is truly rare in history.

The "Old Book of Tang" and "New Book of Tang" of later generations also recorded such a thing: Li Mi, as the leader of the Wagang Army at the same time, had experienced hundreds of battles and was invincible. He had always been quite conceited and surrendered.  The Empress of the Tang Dynasty went to reward the three armies on the order of Emperor Gaozu. After seeing Emperor Taizong, she did not dare to look up to him and said to Yin Kaishan in private: "This is the real Dragon Emperor!"

This shows that Emperor Taizong had the extraordinary aura of "having millions of soldiers in his chest".  As one of the most outstanding military strategists in Chinese history, Emperor Taizong was proficient in strategy and had unparalleled military exploits. He was worthy of the reputation of "the emperor who can best fight".

With such a grandfather weighing on his head, Li Xian, like Li Chengqian back then, is also obsessed with proving his ability and proving that when he sits on the throne of the emperor, the Tang Dynasty can continue to prosper.

Du Rui naturally knew exactly what Li Xian was thinking, so it was no wonder why this expedition ceremony was so grand.

When Emperor Taizong was in power, he destroyed countless countries. After Emperor Gaozong inherited the unification, he also destroyed Tubo, stabilized Central and South China, and expanded countless territories. Now it is Li Xian's turn. The glory of his father and ancestor hangs above his head.  How could he not do his best?

As the commander-in-chief of the expeditionary army, Du Rui felt that it was a supreme honor when he held the ceremony, without any cumbersome feeling.

In the past, what Du Rui was most impatient with was this tedious ritual, but it was different today. As long as this strategic goal of quelling the Great Eclipse could be achieved, the unification of the world would be just around the corner.  And the most important thing is that this may be the last time Du Rui leads an army.

Fortunately, the sacrificial ceremony before the expedition was presided over by officials from the Shizhong, Zongzheng and the Ministry of Rites. Du Rui, the generals who went on the expedition, only had to follow the salutes.

Immediately after Li Xian issued the edict, the Minister of Rites read it personally: "Since I ascended to the throne, I am afraid that my virtue and talent will be mediocre. I will examine myself three times every day, appoint talents, benevolent to the people, build friendship with all nations externally, and cultivate benevolent governance internally. The Tang Dynasty will set its own tripod.  From then on, the family members only devoured the barbarians and lived in remote places, and they showed great kindness and support. In fact, since the previous dynasty, they have expressed their regrets to this day. But they attacked the cities, killed and wounded the officials and the people, and the history of the country was marked.  The punishment will not be pardoned, and it will be punished by heaven, and the teacher will be famous. Now, the Duke of Song Dynasty, Daxingtai Shangshu Ling, Du Rui, the first assistant minister of the cabinet, and the governor are marching westward with 400,000 troops from all walks of life, and they are setting up an army at the right time to attack disrespect. Heaven.  Showing help and obedience is a sign of good fortune; people know that they are insulting the enemy, and they become hostile. However, when the king's teacher arrives, he will not run away. The people who have consulted you have been in ruins for a long time. If you can tell the king to follow him, he will lead the people.  When I return home, I will take prisoners and offer my services, and I will obey you. I will be rewarded with honors and honors as much as usual. All the old evils and burdens will be wiped out. I will remain true to my word, and everyone who listens will not be confused."

Once the edict was promulgated, the people immediately discussed it, and the voice of crusade filled Chang'an.  Since the founding of the Tang Dynasty, many foreign wars have been victorious. Only Dashi is a country that is constantly harassing them.

There is a point in using the word "to beg" instead of "to cut" in the "Edict on the Great Food". Although there is a difference in one word, it has a great meaning.

"Fighting" is usually the tone used by a weak party to use troops against a strong party. For example, when King Wu attacked Zhou, it was like a person standing under a big tree and cutting wood. At least the other party was on an equal footing with him.

"Begging" is when the master accuses his subordinates. For example, when he sent troops to attack Xue Yantuo, he could not use "attack" but could only use "beggar". Otherwise, he would raise the status of the other party to be equal to his own.

Although Dashi has never accepted the canonization of the Tang Dynasty and is not a vassal state of the Tang Dynasty, although Dashi is not a weakling against the extremely ambitious Tang Dynasty, Dashi is not worthy of the word "attack".

If Ye Qi is killed? If I knew it, I really don¡¯t know what to think.

The Dashi Empire is the strongest in the world, but now in the eyes of the Tang people, they are not even qualified to be equal.

After these ceremonies, Du Rui led the generals to stand in line, with their backs to the large army participating in the ceremony, and took the oath in front of the emperor, officials, and the people watching.

"They devoured barbaric little people, refused life with abandon, repeatedly invaded our country, the Tang Dynasty, attacked our cities, killed our people, and plundered our property. Such beastly behavior aroused the indignation of both heaven and man. I should use my righteous army to defeat the evildoers and destroy them."  In its nest, the evil will be eliminated and the violence will be suppressed, so as to inform the world, bring peace to the world, bring peace to the world, and make the Tang Dynasty victorious!"

"The Tang Dynasty will be victorious! The Tang Dynasty will be victorious!"

The deafening sound resounded throughout the land, and the soldiers and the people watching all raised their arms and shouted. For a time, the slogan "The Tang Dynasty will be victorious" resounded inside and outside Chang'an City. This was the effect needed for the expedition ceremony to boost morale.

After the cheers subsided, Emperor Li Xian prepared to award Du Rui the yue and yue representing the power to control the army in front of all the soldiers, indicating that from now on, Du Rui could officially command his troops.

Li Xian's expression was faintly excited. After awarding the knot and yue to Du Rui, he took a step back, looked at Du Rui and the generals behind him, with a smile on his face, and said loudly: "Song Guogong, I hope  This time you can lead the army to completely wipe out the big food and protect the peace of our Tang Dynasty¡¯s western frontier!¡±

Du Rui took the festival and the ax from the emperor's hands, stepped back three steps, performed a solemn military salute, and responded loudly: "Please rest assured, Your Majesty, I will live up to your Majesty's trust, kill the enemy bravely, annihilate the Tang Dynasty as soon as possible, and stabilize our country."  The Western Frontier of the Tang Dynasty will achieve the unfinished ambition of Emperor Taizong and Emperor Gaozong!"

"Well, with the words of Song Guogong, I can rest assured. I will be waiting for your good news in Chang'an!" Li Xian was also very excited.

At this time, Du Taiping, who was dressed in fine clothes, also stepped forward and walked to Li Xian's side. With a slight sadness, he looked at Du Rui in front of him. Although she had not married Li Xian yet, her status had already been established.  It¡¯s settled.

"Daddy, please take care of yourself during this trip!"

Du Rui smiled and said: "Don't worry, my father will spend his whole life in the army, even if he is a cannibal, he will not be able to save his life!"

Li Xian continued: "Duke Guo of Song! The army is about to go out to conquer Dashi and dominate the world!"

"Respecting the will of the Holy One, I will fulfill my mission and swear to kill all the cannibals!" Du Rui replied in a loud voice, and the remaining generals also followed suit.

Li Xian didn¡¯t say anything else. He looked at Du Rui deeply, then smiled at him and turned back to the tower.

After Li Xian returned to the throne, Du Rui stood up and took a step back, holding the knot and yue high above his head, and roared again to the tens of thousands of soldiers lined up in the square: "I swear to kill all the big cannibals.  The Tang Dynasty is victorious!"

"The Tang Dynasty will be victorious! The Tang Dynasty will be victorious! The Tang Dynasty will be victorious! The Tang Dynasty will be victorious!"

The sergeants also waved their weapons and shouted in unison. The roar was loud and accompanied by even more exciting drum music.  The roars of tens of thousands of soldiers ignited everyone's passion, and the people watching also raised their arms and shouted "The Tang Dynasty will be victorious!" It was deafening, and the raised arms and waving weapons were densely packed into a forest.

Amid the excitement of the crowd, Du Rui mounted his horse, drew his sword, and ordered the army to set off. Under the leadership of the front vanguard Gao Xingxing, the forward troops of the army set off, and then the other troops followed. The three who had been waiting outside the city gate.  More than 100,000 soldiers also joined in. In the rising dust and sand, the 400,000-strong army finally set off on the journey.
