    Chapter 74 Base

? Following the road along the edge of the valley out of the hilly area, you will find a gently undulating plain.  Miscellaneous rocks and withered plants overlap with each other, and unmelted snow covers the shady corners. The entire plain is shrouded in a cold and desolate atmosphere. Withered yellow and dim cold gray are the most abundant colors.  .

In front of the gentle slope near the hill, there is a row of low reinforced concrete buildings.  In this era of scarcity, they represented wealth and power.  Only those institutions with large resources and powerful armed forces are qualified to own and maintain such garrison locations.

On the map distributed by the Skeleton Knights, here is an outpost marked with letters and numbers¡ªD212 Base.

Like the Crescent City, a barbed wire fence is set up around the base that can be connected to the current at any time. Thick sandbags are used to form a ring of fortifications at the exit. Heavy machine guns with thick nozzles are mounted on the masonry-mixed guard towers.  The sentries patrolled back and forth behind the metal triangle barrier, watching vigilantly for any slight movement around them.

Under the guidance of Humann, the off-road vehicle drove directly into the medical station located in the logistics area of ??the base.  Several medical staff with round white-backed red crosses on their left arms quickly walked out of the room, carefully carried the injured soldier onto the stretcher, and soon disappeared into the elevator leading underground.

"Let's go! Come with me to report the situation. If everything goes well, it shouldn't take long and you can get the commission."

After settling down the team members, Humann patted Lin Xiang's shoulder in a friendly manner and led him towards a two-story gray building in the center of the base.

Along the way, Lin Xiang made a rough assessment of the strength of the d212 base based on everything he saw.

This place is not big. Except for more than half of the area being military facilities, the rest of the various buildings have a strong commercial atmosphere.  Hotels, bars, warehouses In the area about fifty meters away from the medical station, you can clearly see the obvious signs of such civilian facilities.

In the northeast corner of the base, there stands a factory covering a huge area.  Several trucks loaded with flour and vegetables are slowly driving into the heavy steel gate. If this is used as a basis for judgment, there should be a small food processing factory there.

When entering from the gate, you can see a huge semicircular vault building in the military zone to the south.  A group of armed soldiers patrolled back and forth there. Two Stryker armored vehicles with their turrets removed were parked in a nearby open space. Several technicians wearing light gray uniforms but without any weapons stood around the vehicles.  Apparently, this is a combat vehicle repair station.  Perhaps, it also has the function of repairing and manufacturing small arms at the same time.

Based on the various situations observed so far, it can be roughly estimated that the total number of personnel in the entire base is approximately 300 to 350 people.  Of course, all the secrets of the D212 base should not be limited to the ground.  As for what else is hidden underground, the answer can only be known through further understanding.

Colonel Evans is sitting on the high-backed chair behind his desk, his waist straight, and even the most picky person cannot find any flaws in his sitting posture.

He is about forty years old, with a slim build but a tall overall structure.  The tall nose divides the face into two equally strong halves. His skin is very dark, and his semi-grey beard is neatly combed. These dense and dense bristle hairs extend from both sides of his cheeks and finally end at his broad chin.  form a tightly integrated whole.

From the moment he walked into this office, Lin Xiang's eyes were fixed on the skeleton colonel.

He is not a skeleton knight.  The aura of a sixth-level evolved person emanating from his body has proven this.

?According to the different identities of each person, the internal organization of the Knights is divided into three sequences.

The first category is undoubtedly the Skeleton Knight.  They are the core of the entire organization and the most powerful ones.  Only parasites who break through the ninth level of evolution are eligible to become one of them.

The second category is the skeleton warrior.  They are huge in number and their strength ranges from evolution level one to evolution level nine.  Like the Skeleton Knights, they also use military ranks as the basis for each other's status.  Among them are many important figures who hold high positions as generals.  But even if they are promoted to marshal, they cannot go against the will of a Skeleton Knight Lieutenant.  However, the Skeleton Knight rarely interferes with the actions of the Skeleton Warrior.  More often than not, they only need to put forward the general direction of the plan, and the specific details and processes are perfected and completed by warrior-level figures.  To put it simply, the status contrast between knights and warriors is similar to that between nobles and commoners in feudal society.  Even if the nobles gave enough respect to the common people, they would never take the initiative to overcome the invisible class barrier.

The third category is those who passed the test like Lin Xiang??'s mercenaries.  They are few in number and have rich combat experience.  Mercenaries are peripheral members of the Knights and enjoy the same treatment of purchasing resources as low-level skeleton warriors.  Most of the tasks they need to complete are of a diplomatic nature, and it is not convenient for the Knights themselves to come forward.

The Skeleton Warriors are the most numerous part of the Knights.  They are the backbone of the entire organization, but they cannot play an absolute leading role.  According to Lin Xiang's guesses and contacts, they should be products created by gene synthesis technology.  To put it simply, they are clones.

"What's the damage?" Seeing Lin Xiang and Humann walking into the office, the colonel with a gloomy expression pointed to the two metal folding chairs in front of the desk.

Heumann remained unmoved.  He bit his lower lip tightly and glared at the colonel sitting opposite him with eyes that were almost on the verge of spitting fire.

"I have sent out a distress signal, why haven't reinforcements been sent out?" Heuman asked through gritted teeth, suppressing the excitement and anger rolling deep in his heart.

Colonel Evans looked at him coldly and said nothing.

"Don't talk to me about nonsense like not receiving a fucking signal." Heumann almost roared: "I have been staying in this base since the beginning of construction. Don't say it's ordinary radio interference.  , even in bad weather like a storm, the base tower can still receive a clear signal We waited there for a full two hours, a full two hours! Enewson was blown to pieces, Kluwe and Jay  Mu was directly shot in the head, as well as Leclerc and Mars they didn't have to die, and they wouldn't have died at all."

    "enough¡ª¡ª"

A violent flush suddenly appeared on Colonel Evans's face. Like a prisoner who had been detained for a long time, he suddenly released his wild anger without any warning: "Do you think I am willing to do this? I sent him out as soon as possible.  I called to support the troops, but they couldn't even get out of the base gate and were forced to disband and return to the barracks. I jumped up and down like a madman and tried all the threats and intimidation methods, but I couldn't make the man change his mind. He  I even shut down all the radio receiving equipment in the tower and ordered the operator to wait 24 hours before allowing it to be turned back on From that moment on, the only thing I can do is stay in this room and pray for you in the most pious way -  ¡ª¡±

The colonel roared like a lion.  However, at the end, there was clearly a hint of helpless loneliness and desolation.

The livid-faced Human took a deep breath, and a trace of weak paleness flashed across his face: "He refused to send reinforcements?"

    The colonel nodded silently.

"Why?" Human's tone was full of bitterness: "In the eyes of these guys, are the lives of our clones so worthless?"

Colonel Evans¡¯ eyes were as fierce as a wolf, but the expression on his face was full of indescribable decadence and misery.  He shook his hands and took out a pack of cigarettes from his jacket pocket. He took one out and tried to light it, but the cigarette butt could not get close to the trembling flame on the lighter.  Finally, he gave up all his futile efforts and used his rough hands to roll the unburned cigarette into a ball.  Looking at the gray-yellow tobacco falling on the ground from between his fingers, he sighed melancholy and helplessly.

"It's not a matter of money. In their eyes, wecan't be considered human beings at all."

Accepting commissions from employers is the main source of money for mercenaries.

Whether it is the Skeleton Knights, Thorsbia, or any other large organization, except for certain targeted situations with specific directions, they will issue a long-term and effective mission without time limit.

Collect the corpses or blood samples of all unknown or mutated creatures.  The specific remuneration will be evaluated based on the conclusion after the sample has been authenticated.

The purpose of collecting blood samples is to use them as special goods to exchange benefits with other institutions.

The "Doctors United Association" collects blood samples in order to develop and produce more effective enhanced medicines.

As for the Skeleton Knights they have never disclosed information about this.  They are simply offered as open bounties in all cities and settlements at very high prices.  The amount is much higher than any other institution.

This is Lin Xiang¡¯s unexpected gain at the d212 base.  When he took the certification document issued by Colonel Evans and came to the base logistics department to collect the bounty received by the rescue team, he found these contents from the public information entries at no cost.

Out of gratitude, the colonel issued a one-time bounty of up to 8,000 skull yuan within the scope of his authority, and also upgraded Lin Xiang's mercenary qualification from C level to B level.  The most direct manifestation of this improvement in terms of benefits is that mercenary license holders can enjoy a 10% discount when purchasing supplies.Like all places, the bar attached to the d212 base is also filled with the atmosphere of decadence, debauchery and desire.

The light in the bar, which can accommodate hundreds of people, is very dim. With the help of hormones, alcohol and tobacco violently expel the fresh and elegant air, and jointly release a strong temptation, filling every corner of the bar.

A dozen scantily clad women wandered back and forth in the bar.  Sometimes they would lean on the edge of the bar, using their bright lips and high-heeled shoes to attract men's attention.  Sometimes he would jump on the small stage in the center of the bar, twist his body tightly against the steel pipe, and make various seductive postures that would make men's blood rush.  Occasionally, a barbarian whose senses are greatly stimulated will rush forward, throw down a wad of banknotes, carry them high on his shoulders like cargo, and rush to the bathroom or rush to the bathroom with countless whistles and envious eyes following them.  In the small bedroom upstairs, the atmosphere in the bar will reach its climax.

If it weren¡¯t for the invitation from Human and several team members, Lin Xiang would never have stepped foot into a place like this.

He doesn¡¯t dislike bars, but he doesn¡¯t like them either.  He has always believed that whether it is the old era of destruction or the new era of scarcity of resources, the meaning of the existence of bars is just to empty all the money from men's pockets.

Heumann is obviously a frequent visitor here.  Familiarly, he led Lin Xiang to a round table in the central area and sat down. He raised his hands and snapped his fingers at the bartender. He shouted loudly in a tone full of showoff and exaggeration: "Two bottles, please."  The best whisky-"

Many people¡¯s eyes were drawn in this direction.  The focus of his eyes quickly focused on the stranger Lin Xiang.  There are also many dancers with graceful figures and good looks among them.

A tall dancer with nude skin, wearing only a white bra and a thin thong came over.  She deliberately raised her exaggeratedly large breasts, rubbed Lin Xiang's arm with her round and slightly curved buttocks, and amidst the intensive whistles and boos from the onlookers, she raised her slender thighs and pointed at Lin Xiang.  He blew a kiss, then walked over to the female companions in front of the bar, casting seductive glances at them, making no effort to hide his naked seduction.

Men like beautiful women, and women also like handsome men.

Lin Xiang smiled bitterly and shook his head.

"It seems that you are more popular than me."

Huemann¡¯s words were full of playful jealousy and envy.  He picked up the cup in front of him, raised it high in front of Lin Xiang, and said in the most sincere tone: "Thank you for saving us¡ª"

Although Lin Xiang rarely drinks, he can't refuse.  He grabbed the glass and drank the liquid inside.  A burning sensation as hot as fire spread from the throat to the stomach.

Like the wine of the olden days, whiskey with extremely high alcohol content is strong enough to drive people crazy.

Wine is the best conversation aid.  Even the most taciturn person will immediately become the most impulsive speaker after two glasses of wine.

?Human is no exception.  While the strong alcohol anesthetized his brain, it also stimulated his language organ.  He talked endlessly about all kinds of daily trivial matters, cursed those high-ranking big shots, and occasionally called a few beautiful dancers over to touch and squeeze their soft and smooth waists and buttocks unscrupulously.  Only at this time can he find his true self.

Lin Xiang took a sip of the light yellow wine and seemingly casually directed the topic to the direction he was concerned about.

"There's one thing I haven't been able to figure out. Whether in Emma or Crescent City, there are very few people with yellow skin like me. It seems that there are only white and black people left in this world, and even the mob in the wilderness  No exception. What about the rest of the people? Have they all been eaten as snacks by those terrifying mutated creatures?"

"Human drank a glass of wine and said with satisfaction: "You have a very rich imagination. But you didn't guess the answer correctly. In fact, there are at least two reasons for the scarcity of yellow people."

    "oh?"

"Let me ask you a question first, do you have parents?" Humanman did not directly answer Lin Xiang's doubts, but asked another question that seemed to have no connection.

Lin Xiang nodded and added: "They passed away when I was very young."

    "Lucky you¡ª¡ª"

Humanman licked his lips and sighed in a bitter tone: "I don't even know who my parents are."

As he spoke, he straightened up, pointed at the other soldiers at the table and everyone in the bar, and said mockingly: "Not only me, but everyone here doesn't know their parents. We are test-tube people,  It is the product of excitement and desire, and it is the most successful work of asexual reproduction technology.¡±

Huemann squinted his eyes??, he took out a cigarette from the cigarette case on the table and lit it, blowing out slowly rising smoke rings towards the dimly lit ceiling, murmuring like a dream.

"My childhood was white. Walls, windows, tables and chairs, food just like my skin, everything was white. We lived in those white buildings, and people wearing white clothes taught us all  Necessary knowledge They are all replicas just like us. The only difference is probably that they came to this world earlier than us."

"The ship brought us to this place. Every day's tasks are so monotonous, except for fighting, it is rest and recovery. There is no shortage of supplies, and supplies are sufficient. New personnel are always filling the gaps for the soldiers who died in the battle, and they even don't even  We need to recover the corpses of the fallen. Perhaps in the eyes of those managers, we are actually just a bunch of moving carbohydrates and protein combinations. As long as there is enough food and resources, we can produce them at any time."

"Speaking of yellow people, I have never seen any form of yellow-skinned replicas. Of course, this is just my own speculation."

Speaking of which, Heumann deliberately lowered his voice: "In fact, there is a legend that has been circulating among those veterans."

"Legend?" Lin Xiang's eyes flashed with strange light.

Humanman nodded: "According to the veterans who first came to this continent, many people with yellow skin like you actually went to another place."

    "Where have they gone?"

"To the west. If you go northwest, you can find their settlement. Of course, this is just a legend. None of us have ever been there, nor have we really seen it."
