The protagonist of this book is a monk.

The title "monk" is very interesting. Logically speaking, Buddhism was introduced from India, and the word "Buddha" is also a transliteration of Sanskrit.  Then the title of monk should also come from Sanskrit, that is, Indian. But here is the problem. The translation of this word is very problematic. It can neither be regarded as a transliteration nor a free translation.

If it is a transliteration, ordinary monks in India should be called Ubo Chaka, while monks with status, such as monks who specialize in ordaining new monks and those who explain Buddhism to new monks, are called Ubo  Tuoye.  No matter which name it is, if it is transliterated into Chinese, it has nothing to do with the way the monk pronounces it.

If it is a free translation, then we should translate Upo Chaka as apprentice.  And Upotharaya should be translated as teacher.  The great writer Han Yu once said that a teacher is someone who preaches, teaches, and solves doubts.  And what the Upastras did was to promote Buddhism to those Upasakas, teach them the Dharma, and inspire them to enlightenment.

Since the meaning of Sanskrit is this, why does a monk have such a completely irrelevant name in China?

There are two theories in the religious circles about this matter. The first one is that Buddhism was first spread to the Hotan area in Xinjiang. Yes, it is the place where jade is produced.  During the Han Dynasty, this was the Western Region and was called the Kingdom of Khotan.  And these uneducated barbarians in Khotan easily translated Upo Chaka as Heshe, and Upo Tuoye were translated into Hesha.

And Heshe and sand, later because of many people who wrote the wrong words, they became monks with rumors.

And another way of saying this is from the so-called forum literature.  It is said that since the rise of online forums, some so-called simple words, such as I agree with the view above, have been shortened to the same as above, or more directly, just one word, thumbs up!  The benefits of this kind of vocabulary are simplicity, directness, scoring points, and leaving!

Of course, the vocabulary produced by forum literature also includes sofa, bench, dewdrops on the sand wall, dusk and dawn, etc. We won¡¯t go into more details.

Why is it said that the emergence of the title "monk" is related to forum literature? Because when the earliest Buddhists were writing reports, they felt that there were too many strokes in Upo Chaka, Upo Tuya, etc., which was very annoying to write, and even more so.  Not to mention that due to the development of productivity at that time, books were all made of bamboo slips, and the words were not written, but carved out one by one with a knife.

So at that time, they were just like simplifying things like the above in forum literature. If words like Upo Chaka had been written before, then they would use another word instead. This word is called He Shang, which means  Just like the above title, over time, illiterate people who saw this word later thought that this and above were synonymous with Buddhists.

During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, among the illiterate people who thought that Heshang was the collective name for Buddhists, a very awesome guy appeared. This guy's name was Shi Le, and this guy named Shi Le admired Fotucheng, a senior monk at that time.  And he respected him to the point that Shi Le thought that ordinary people could no longer reflect his love for Fotucheng.

So Shi Le gave Fotucheng an honorary title, respectfully calling Fotucheng the Supreme Harmony.  Then he found that the word "´óºÍÉÏ" was too unpleasant, so he changed the word "Shang" to the word "Shang", and he became the "Great Monk".  Since Fotucheng is the great monk, the other "heshang" are naturally the lesser monks. Therefore, the term "monk" made a grand appearance in history.

To sum up, it can be seen that no matter where the word monk comes from, it is inseparable from typos. Otherwise, it is terrible to be uneducated!

Buddhism was introduced into our country in this uneducated situation, and soon, Buddhism was infected by our own culture. During the Jin and Jin Dynasties, people incorporated the teachings of Laozi and Zhuangzi into Buddhism. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties,  In addition to Laozi and Zhuangzi, people also stuffed Confucius and Mencius into it.

Of course, at this time, no matter whether it is Lao Zhuang, Confucius and Mencius, it can still be said to be an exchange between people within the philosophy circle.  By the end of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, people were no longer limited to inserting other philosophical systems into the thoughts of Buddhism, but also stuffed whatever they caught into customs, habits, food, clothing, housing, transportation, astronomy and geography.

Therefore, by the end of the Sui Dynasty, under the "dundun destruction" of many predecessors, Buddhism had become a huge one, including many sects, and even the opinions of these sects were completely opposite. I believe  It is such a huge and unparalleled religious system that even the resurrected Sakyamuni could not recognize it.

These sects include the Tiantai Sect founded by the monk Zhiyi, the Sanlun Sect founded by the monk Jizang, the Huayan Sect founded by the monk Fashun, and the Shelun Sect founded by the monk Zhendi. The Bitan sect that monk Daoan summarized and carried forward was the Chengshi sect that originated from Kumarajiva, the Nirvana sect that even Xie Lingyun joined, and the Dilun sect of Bodhiliu branch and Lenamoti.

The various Buddhist sects mentioned above all existed before the late Sui Dynasty and early Tang Dynasty.

After the end of the Sui Dynasty and the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, the names of Buddhist sects also had to include the Dharma Sect founded by the famous Tang monk Xuanzang, the Tantric Sect spread after the entry of Padmasambhava, and the Discipline Sect whose purpose was to practice asceticism and asceticism.  .

The above Buddhist sects also include the White Lotus Sect, which originated during the Jin Dynasty and has been associated with various revolutionary events such as peasant uprisings. (Later, after everyone shouted the name Bailian Sect, this sect was renamed.  Pure Land Sect.) And our protagonist joins the Zen sect founded by Patriarch Bodhidharma, a direct disciple of Sakyamuni from India.

These are the thirteen famous Buddhist sects in history.

Some of these illustrious Buddhist sects have been circulating since the Jin Dynasty, such as the White Lotus Sect and the Nirvana Sect.  Some were established only during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, such as Bitan Sect and Chengshi Sect.  Some were later established and were not established until the middle of the Tang Dynasty, such as the Precepts Sect and Tantric Sect.

And more of them were established during the Sui Dynasty and the Wude Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty.  Just like Tiantai Sect, Sanlun Sect, Faxiang Sect, Huayan Sect, and even the Zen Sect of Bodhidharma can be counted in this era.

This is an era where bald heads gather and eminent monks gather. Almost all Buddhist theories are preached, believed in, and even laid down in this era.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the epoch of wisdom, it was the epoch of foolishness; it was the epoch of faith, it was the epoch of doubt; it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness;  This is the spring of hope, this is the winter of despair; we have everything before us, we have nothing before us; we are going straight to heaven, we are going straight to hell.

This is the third year of Wude.

The era of the thirty-six rebels who overthrew the Great Sui Dynasty, and the glory of the seventy-two places has passed.  Li Yuan, Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty, was leading his sons who were like wolves and tigers to sweep the world and create their own era.

Similarly, Buddhism also began to decline after passing an extremely glorious peak.

Among the thirteen sects of Buddhism, the Bitan sect and the Nirvana sect, which were most prosperous for a while, have begun to come to an end.  The mysterious White Lotus Sect has begun to go astray.  The Tiantai Sect, which was at its peak, lost its former glory with the death of monk Zhiyi.

The founder of the Faxiang Sect, the most famous monk in the world, and the protagonist of Journey to the West, Mr. Tang Monk Xuanzang, was still in Chengdu at this time, learning the classic Eight Gandard Theory of the Bitan Sect from the Bitan Sect¡¯s monk Huizhen.  At this time, there were still twelve years left before he took the famous monkey king to the West to worship Buddha and seek scriptures.

In this year, Li Yuan set his sights on Wang Shichong after killing the second and fifth son Dugu Huaien.

In this year, Qin King Li Shimin regained Jinyang and drove Liu Wuzhou to the Turks.

It was in this year that Li Jing broke through 5,000 yuan from 800 yuan, and began his journey as a military god.

In this year, Lu Hao, the governor of Jiangzhou, died of illness, and Xiao Xian, the king of Liang, was busy dealing with those generals under him who could lead troops in war but were very domineering.  So Gai Yanju, who didn't know how to fight but was very respectful, went to Jiujiang County, Jiangzhou and served as the general manager of Jiangzhou.

In this year, Monk Fa Lin came to Lushan to visit Daoxin, planning to invite Daoxin to go to Chang'an with him to save Li Yuan from the evil heretics like Wang Zhiyuan, Qi Pingding and others.

In this year, Master Daoxin, the fourth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, officially sent his great disciple Hongren to Qizhou to serve as the supervisor of Zhengjue Temple in Huangmei County, and began to lay the foundation for the southward migration of Zen Buddhism.

It was in this year that the protagonist, whose parents both died, encountered the biggest crisis in his life for the second time!-
