Exclusive conversation with Ye Wei after the Golden Globe nominations were announced: I am a filmmaker

    December 14, 2005 08:53

Sina Entertainment News: In the early morning of December 13th local time in the United States, the 63rd American Film and Television Golden Globe Awards announced the nomination list. "Little Miss Sunshine" directed by Chinese-American director Ye Wei and "Brokeback Mountain" directed by Chinese-American director Ang Lee also  It received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and other awards, and became the focus of attention.

At only 17 years old, Ye Wei broke the record of being the youngest nominee for the Best Director Award, which had been waiting for many years.  Over the phone, Sina Entertainment had an exclusive conversation with Brother Wei.  He said that he is just a filmmaker who loves movies and is nothing special.  Brother Wei joked that he would be the first to applaud Ang Lee for winning the award.

Sina Entertainment: First of all, congratulations on being nominated and breaking the record. How do you feel now?

Ye Wei: Thank you, I feel very happy and grateful. I would like to thank everyone who supports me. This is everyone¡¯s moment.

Sina Entertainment: You are only 17 years old, but you have already achieved so much. What do you think of this?

Ye Wei: I look at it from a movie perspective. I am nothing special. I am just a person who loves movies. I got the opportunity and made a few movies and won everyone's love.  That's the thing, no matter what, in my heart, I am a filmmaker, and I try to never change that.

Sina Entertainment: Don¡¯t you think you are a big star?

Ye Wei: I don¡¯t like to live a celebrity life.  Being famous is a very complicated thing. There are some aspects that you will like very much. For example, when you go out to eat and check out at a restaurant, you suddenly learn that you have a discount.  But there are also many bad aspects that can easily mess up your life.  I've been through this experience, and I think everyone who becomes famous learns to cope better at a certain cost.  But I understand that when you enter this industry, you get the good things and you also have to face the bad things.

Sina Entertainment: Tell us about your current life situation?

Ye Wei: I am being interviewed by you at school.  I still continue to go to school and live my life as usual. It is almost the Christmas and New Year holidays, and I will go on vacation to welcome the new year.

Sina Entertainment: There are a lot of rumors about your new movie. Is there anything you can disclose?

Ye Wei: There are many rumors because there are many projects being approached, but we haven¡¯t decided which one to join. I believe there will be definite news soon.

Sina Entertainment: Could it be a Chinese-language movie?  Do you have any idea of ??making a Chinese-language movie sometime?

Ye Wei: Making Chinese-language films has been one of my goals since childhood. I am Chinese and I am passionate about Chinese-language films.  I like martial arts, kung fu and other very Chinese themes, and there are countless excellent filmmakers in the Chinese film industry that I want to work with.  But everything depends on fate. I don¡¯t know when fate will arrive. Maybe it will be the next project, or it may take some years.  But I will definitely make Chinese-language films, that¡¯s for sure.

Sina Entertainment: This is really good news.  Another Chinese director Ang Lee has also been shortlisted for Best Director. You are going to compete with him. What do you think?

Ye Wei: (laughing) An Li and I are old friends. Compared with him, he is a worldly master in the world, and I am just a small player who has just entered the world.  I am a fan of his movies myself, and "Brokeback Mountain" is a movie that exceeds a perfect score.  Of course I hope that I can win the award, and I also hope that Anna Lee and Steven Spielberg will win, because there are many nominated directors who have not been nominated and have made good movies.  If Ang Lee wins the award, I will be the first to stand up and applaud.

Sina Entertainment: When will you come to China?  Are there any plans for this?

Ye Wei: In interviews with Chinese media, I have said many times when I would travel to China. Unfortunately, in the end, my plans were disrupted due to unexpected events.  My relationship with China is to absorb and supply oxygen. I need to go back regularly to replenish oxygen, otherwise I will die.  Next summer, no matter what, I will travel to China. Maybe I will meet you at some entertainment show then. I don¡¯t know yet. I will make arrangements then.

Sina Entertainment: Is there anything special you want to say to Chinese movie fans?

Ye Wei: Thank you, I am honored to have your support. I have always had a special place for you in my heart, just like brothers and sisters.

Three principles?  This is absolutely impossible.

Brian had a headache. Two years ago, Ye Wei would still listen to advice, although in the end he would still act with his own ideas, but now he doesn't listen at all. He is spoiled by success.

"Are you kidding me?" When I told the people in the company about this situation, everyone's first reaction was to be shocked.

Don¡¯t talk about the Three Principles??, viy can't get any of them yet. The core thing is that he still can't get into the production management of big projects.

what to do?  Brian wanted to change Ye Wei's mind through various tricks, but this genius gave a hard order to communicate today, otherwise he would reply by himself.

Brian had no choice but to bite the bullet and communicate about the "Fantastic Elf Event Book" project first. If there was anyone among the six major companies who was most likely to agree or at least negotiate, it would definitely be Paramount.  Because it has the closest relationship with DreamWorks and the most serious invitation, "Snow White and the Seven Monks" ranked second, while some projects are just trying their luck to gain attention.

Picking up the phone receiver on his desk, he called Katherine Kennedy with difficulty.

The box office of lms is close to 150 million, and it has also entered the stage of being reduced to small and medium-sized screenings week by week.  Seven Golden Globe nominations didn't do much to stimulate its box office, just because it had already made almost all the money it could make from the potential audience.

In this week¡¯s North American movie market, ¡°The Chronicles of Narnia¡± dominated the market, with 76% and 61% on Rotten Tomatoes; while ¡°King Kong¡±, which was released for two days, was somewhat less than expected, with 84% and 50%.

The outbreak of "The Chronicles of Narnia" has once again increased the popularity of movies adapted from children's fantasy novels. It has become the biggest success after HP. It was released at the same time in the UK and other places and the box office was very good. There is no problem in making it into a series.  And "Fantasy Elf Incident", which Ye Wei is being invited to direct, has also become a hot topic.

The latest news coming out is that the progress is not going very smoothly. According to insiders, the conditions proposed by Ye Wei are very harsh and the matter has entered the "most difficult moment".

Before, Kathleen Kennedy was confident that Ye Wei would join, so why was it suddenly the most difficult?  What conditions did the prodigy put forward?

There are a lot of speculations from the outside world, and the most likely possibility is undoubtedly the salary?

    ¡¡

There is mud and grass splashing on the grass, and golf balls fly into the blue sky.

"Wow! I feel like I hit a hole in one!"

On Friday afternoon, after school, Ye Wei was invited to play golf at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, at the invitation of Katherine Kennedy and his wife.

The largest investors in "Old Man" are Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies, including Kennedy/Marshall.  These two big producers are the queen and king of the project's production team, and first producer Mark Canton is also supervised by them.

Regarding his three principles, Brian has only communicated with them. It¡¯s not possible, but we can talk about it slowly. In the past few days, everyone has been trying to persuade him to change his mind.

There really is no winter in Los Angeles. The vast rural grasslands are still green and most of the trees are holly green.

After Ye Wei took a swing, he walked to the distant green with the Kennedys, Brian, and Goetzman.  He has only a moderate interest in the sport. Brentwood Country Club is almost at his doorstep, and he has been playing golf for work for several years.

"Young man, take it easy, birdie is not bad either." Kathleen Kennedy's words were quite meaningful, with a kind smile on her face and a shrewd look in her eyes.  She said: "Frank and I both came from young people and can understand your thinking."

¡°None of the young people we have worked with over the years have had conflicts,¡± said Frank Marshall. The ball cap on his head covers his bald forehead, and his white hair sprouts from both sides. He is also 59 years old.

Catherine nodded and added: "Like Shyamalan, when he was filming "The Sixth Sense", he was not as powerful as you are now. We respected his ideas and used his talents, and everything turned out well in the end. 6 Oscars  Nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.¡±

"The global box office is nearly 700 million U.S. dollars." Marshall also said, "Then Shyamalan started producing "The Immortal" the next year, and film companies were willing to invest in him. We know that you have produced three movies.  Every time is different, there must be a step.¡±

Ye Wei remained silent and did not speak. Everyone continued to walk and talk. Marshall said: "If it can be done,Yes, we would like to meet your requirements too.  I trust you absolutely. A year ago I wouldn't trust you, but now I do.  When Steven and Tom originally invested in you, I asked them, should we let him make some video movies first?  "

There was a chuckle, and Gotzman also said: "I had the same attitude at the beginning, and I almost became a fool."

Catherine looked at Ye Wei and said: "Now everyone knows your talent. But these are the rules of the industry. We must try our best to abide by these game rules. This is good for everyone. We can't give you the three principles, send  Ramon will not agree, but we can assure you that you will actually have these powers."

"Yes, Wei." Brian almost pressed Ye Wei's hand, but how could he dare? Today's event is entirely to lobby Viy, a young big shot.

It took this kid two years from the time he lobbied others to the time others lobbied him.

"You know" Ye Wei smiled. Ever since he was betrayed by the Willis team, he would never believe any verbal promise not written into the contract.

"I believe in you." He said to everyone, twirling the cue, "I just don't believe in Hollywood. Catherine, Frank, Gary, if there are no contract terms, you will all have times when you can't do what you want, let alone authorize it to me.  There are no contract terms, too many changes.¡±

Walking into the green, he looked around and said, "I want these rights not because I don't want to abide by the rules of the game, but because I want to protect myself and my movie."

Viy still didn¡¯t change his mind, and the four of them were a little helpless. Brian said in a negative tone: "Wei, you have to understand that your request is too much. If you continue to be stubborn, you will only lose opportunities."

"It will indeed be like this, whether it's "Fantasy Elf Events" or other big projects." Catherine also sounded a little more serious, "It's really not possible, you will be laughed at. People will say, look at that genius boy, he  I'm so excited. But you are a smart person and shouldn't make this mistake."

Marshall continued to lobby directly: "Maybe you think it's a big deal for me to make an independent film. In fact, it is more risky and may not be better than you joining our project. You can be one of the planners in the team. The thing is, we need your talent.  Inviting you to join is not a waste.¡±

"I really believe in you, and I really, really want to cooperate with you." Ye Wei looked at the Kennedys sincerely, "I will definitely learn a lot. If I make a movie with you, I will become better. Then  It¡¯s something more precious than money, but I have my principles, not against anyone, just principles.¡±

"Have you ever thought about it, even if the investment goes smoothly." Marshall still said that independent production is not good, "You can only get 20 to 30 million at most now. How much salary are you going to give yourself with this money? Ten million  How much money is left to make a movie? It¡¯s too risky for you to get a share of the film.¡±

Catherine¡¯s words were like shining golden light: ¡°If you join this project, we will have the opportunity to negotiate a salary of 10 million for you, or 5 million plus box office share.¡±

Ye Wei walked to his golf ball, stopped talking, and pushed towards the hole about ten yards away. The ball slid across the grass and passed the hole, missing.

"Look, you are impatient." Brian shook his head, and Goetzman also said: "If you prepare more, you should be able to score. This goal is not difficult."

"Brothers." Ye Weiyi smiled, because he had already made up his mind and could not be persuaded by them. "My family almost went bankrupt two years ago. I know what money means and everyone loves it. It's just that when there is no financial pressure on the family,  Next, I hope to be myself and a filmmaker while I am young.¡±

He didn't mind telling these people how he felt: "A few days ago, a very important person to me asked me, are you still viy? That feeling scared me, I was afraid that I was not myself. I didn't want to be 20 yet.  At the age of 18, I will live a life without self. That is not what I want.

So everyone, I understand your good intentions, I really understand, maybe this is stupid, but I insist on my demands, I want my three principles.  "

The four of them were silent for a while.  Catherine and Marshall looked at each other. How to deal with the director is one of the biggest daily tasks of a producer. There are too many lunatics, weirdos, lunatics, and abnormal people in the film industry. They are not afraid of dealing with them. What they are most afraid of is talented people. Talented people are all  What a bastard.

Viy, you are such a bastard who can¡¯t deal with interests.  If it satisfies his personality, he can give you a shockingly good movie. If it doesn't, there will be nothing.

The two of them looked at Ye Wei with a determined look on his face, and both knew that this matter might not be possible

Brian is a little desperate. He must make up his mind to negotiate the three principles. There is no other way. Mortals cannot understand what geniuses think.

    ¡¡

This golf negotiation ended up not happeningAny progress has been made.

In the evening, Ye Wei drove home and told Brian clearly again that there was no need to say more, everything had been said.  He didn't plan to spend this weekend negotiating. He had already agreed with Nina that he would go to Toronto and travel to Europe together during the upcoming Christmas vacation.

On the evening flight, I had dinner at home with Duoduo and Tuo
