Text Chapter 132 The First Brother of the Film Festival

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

The Harvard-Westlake Film Festival was founded by alumna Elizabeth Yale. It is open to all high school students (grades 9-12) living in California. Videos of any type are welcome and more than one work can be submitted.

Therefore, among the 92 submitted works in the first session this year, only about 40% were works by students from our school, and the other 60% came from Santa Monica High School, Beverly Hills High School, Roosevelt High School and other schools.  The average length of each of these films is less than 5 minutes, and the outstanding ones will be selected to form the exhibition films of the two and a half-hour party that night, and the rest will be displayed in a loop on the following weekend.

Elizabeth Yale is of course very happy to see that the film festival is so attractive, and there are really many excellent works emerging from the pile of works, especially Ye Wei from our school!

The two works he submitted, as well as "Winter Girls" written by him and submitted by Lev Pobil, are also very good and can definitely defend the home honor of Harvard-Westlake.

However, the closer to the film festival, the more troubled she became. "Dance of Angels" won too many other works!  It's like a high school film festival mixed in with a Sundance Best Short Film, and yes, it should have been at Sundance, not Harvard-Westlake.

Now normally speaking, all seven major awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, and Most Creative, judged by a professional jury, will definitely be swept by it.  It is definitely the most popular one voted by the audience, and other works will have nothing.

Sure enough, when the judging panel was formed, they all meant this.

There are four people on the jury, 54-year-old Jon Avnet, the producer of "It's Crazy", the producer and director of "Fried Green Tomatoes", and many well-known films, and an Emmy  Award nomination; 50-year-old Martha De Laurentiis, producer of "Edge", "Hannibal" and other films; Donna Ross, producer of films such as "Girls Dream 30".

They are all top figures in the industry, but the most important one is 49-year-old Kevin Costner!  His masterpiece is undoubtedly "Dances with Wolves", which won the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Director, and was nominated for Best Actor.

As a high school film festival, it is hard to find another one in the United States that can invite them to judge. Harvard-Westlake is worthy of its reputation.

They have already heard of "Dance of Angels". When they look at it again, they have the same attitude and there is no comparison at all. "Dance of Angels" is a work on another level. To be fair, it will win all the awards.  Anyone who says otherwise is making a stupid joke.

But it¡¯s really not her original intention for one work to sweep the show. She hopes to encourage more young people who love movies, and the awards can be ¡°averaged¡±.

Treating "Dance of Angels" unfairly is not what she wants. This will ruin the reputation of the film festival. Think about it if something happens like Ye Wei angrily withdraws from the exhibition and denounces the shady story in the media, then  It's all screwed up.

What can we do?  How can we fairly give Ye Wei and "Dance of Angels" the honor they deserve, while also allowing other students to participate?

¡°And Ye Weicai is only in grade 9. What if he participates again in the next three years?  Let him sweep four years in a row?

Time passed day by day, and just a week before the film festival, Elizabeth Yale finally thought of a good idea!

She communicated with the school immediately: "We have added a special award called the 'Ye Wei Award'. This award is awarded to particularly outstanding works that are close to or reaching professional level, such as "Dance of Angels",  It is not awarded every year, only when this happens. After a film wins the 'Ye Wei Award', it will automatically withdraw from the competition for other jury awards, but it has already won the highest honor of the film festival."

This method is very good. The only problem is whether Ye Wei is willing to do it or not, because the award is named after him and requires his consent, otherwise it can only be called the "Most Professional Award" or something like that.

The old principal Hudnut said to her happily: "Ye Wei, this student seems to be naughty, but he is actually very sensible, no problem." He said in a tone of boasting about his proud disciple.

So, Yale then called Ye Wei and told him the situation. He admitted that the level of "Dance of Angels" was too high and that it had to do this for the good development of the film festival.

"Wow, this is very cool. There is a special award in my name, like I am a big shot, cool!" Ye Wei's voice was very happy, and he asked: "Can my "Good People Are Rewarded" compete for those judges' awards?"

"Yes, it is also an excellent work and should be rewarding." Yale did not disclose exactly what the judges thought. Ye Wei's agreement really made her relieved.

"That's even better, but my friends may be a little disappointed. They are looking forward to my sweeping victory.", but I will let them understand how surprising the ¡®Ye Wei Award¡¯ is.  "

"Weige, thank you for your understanding of us. One more thing. We invite you to give a 5-10 minute speech to everyone. After awarding you the 'Ye Wei Award', we hope you can share about chasing your dreams.  The mood encourages fellow filmmakers.¡±

"OK, I feel honored. I have always done a good job in this regard."

"I also heard that you have first-class speaking skills. Jake Gyllenhaal is under pressure. He is a special speaker."

"Haha, I know. I've been looking forward to meeting him. I loved his "Death Illusion" so much. He is also preparing to star in "Brokeback Mountain" directed by Ang Lee. I have to ask him for Ang Lee's number. I'm a little bit  It¡¯s troublesome to perform, haha!¡±

After the phone call ended, Yale agreed with the old president¡¯s view. She didn¡¯t see the ¡°devil¡¯s spirit.¡± What she saw was a good student who added to the glory of Harvard-Westlake!

    ¡¡

The day before the film festival, after the filming of "Wedding Day is Coming" was completed, and just after bidding farewell to the set and going to the beach to play, Ye Weicai told everyone about this "surprise".

"What!? Then we can't say, 'You are here to compete for fourth place'!?" Lev and Bud screamed uncontrollably, "It's so unfair!", "Brother Wei is a student of our school, how could they?  Like this!", "Shady story! Despicable shady story!"

Gia screamed a few times, as if gloating, "Harvard-Westlake is losing its glory."

"Yes, if we don't let Wei take it, why should we give it to those foreign students?" Connie was very angry.

When it comes to this, the Wolverines become even more angry, like their old enemies from Beverly Hills High School, they are coming menacingly!

The number of rich and famous children in that school is no less than that of HW. Because the academic style is relatively relaxed and the TV series "Beverly Over" serves as a signature, although the academic level is not as good as HW, it is often more ostentatious and dazzling.

There are many students who are involved in entrepreneurship, especially in the entertainment and film industry. Although no one can make such a big splash as Ye Wei, they cannot be called ordinary high school students. There is also a guy who holds dance parties every year by organizing  Earning more than 100,000 US dollars, he hired a dozen classmates and friends to work for him.

The HW Film Festival is an opportunity for them to compete for face. If you want to dominate the entire party, what are the expressions of those foreign students present!

"Calm down! All my works can participate in the competition for the most popular award, and I also have "Good People Are Rewarded". Besides, how cool is the 'Ye Wei Award'. Others only win one or two awards at most, but I am the award.  ! You can¡¯t just get it if you want, you have to be on another level.¡±

Ye Wei gestured with both hands, with his left hand lower and his right hand higher, indicating that he was on the right hand level.

Lily was the calmest wolverine besides him, but she also frowned: "Of course the 'Ye Wei Award' is very cool, but the Best Director Award, with you here, I won't applaud if someone else takes it."

¡°Me too!¡±, ¡°Whoever took it, boo him to death!¡±, ¡°I guarantee he won¡¯t be able to walk out of the rugby theater!¡±

"If I had known that my "Truant Girl" would also participate, I would have a chance, but I need to be a student of a certain high school."

"You have no chance." Ye Wei looked at Gia and said confidently: "You don't need an ax to break eggs. The use of lenses, light, shadow and color in "Good Guys Are Rewarded" are not professional, but they are already popular among high school students.  On an excellent level, it also has great conception, acting, editing and soundtrack. With it, I won¡¯t be afraid of any high school student, unless there is a Spielberg in it.¡±

He is not bragging, he has never lacked film talent, but he used to be able to play with anything for three minutes. Otherwise, he would not be afraid of the 16-year-old Spielberg.

Thinking about it, everyone thinks that "Good Men Are Rewarded" is indeed very good. They are used to comparing it with "Dance of Angels", but they have forgotten the average level of high school students' works. It is definitely competitive!  Gia, who had not seen it yet, was very interested.

"Don't forget, others will hear this sentence: Are you here to compete for fourth place?" Ye Wei laughed.

"Haha, Brother Wei, our time is coming!"

    ¡¡

With everyone¡¯s great anticipation, Friday the 16th has arrived as scheduled, and the Harvard-Westlake Film Festival is here!

Everyone continues to go to school during the day, and the film festival party will open at 19:30. Because the tickets are first come, first served, and the rugby theater is not big, with only 340 seats, the tickets must be snapped up, except for Ye Wei and Lev, who are automatically awarded  The participating producers, whether Lily or Bud, have tickets to grab them.

To be sure, Bud, Chen Nuo and Kerwin rushed to the high school campus with prepared food as soon as school was over in the afternoon. They took Master Gia along with them on the way and had to arrive three or four hours in advance.Because Ye Wei is a special person and needs to cooperate with the organizer's rehearsal work, he has already arrived at noon and met with Elizabeth Yale, consultants Shelly Gaulke and Ted Walker, old principal Hudnut and others  , the Gyllenhaal siblings haven¡¯t arrived yet!

On the other side, Lily returned home shortly after school, took a shower, changed clothes and put on makeup.  It was originally agreed that her mother would come back and go with them, but her mother had something to do and couldn't make it back. Instead, she asked Madeline, the family nanny, to drive her there.  However, not only did Madeline arrive very slowly, there was also a traffic jam when she passed. When she arrived at the high school campus, it was already 18:47.

The parking lot was full of cars, so Madeleine could only drive to a nearby parking lot. It was obvious why.

"Oh my god!" Lily walked quickly into the campus as soon as she got out of the car and ran towards the lively rugby theater. If I had known, I would have taken a taxi. How annoying!

As she ran, she took her mobile phone and looked at the latest text message from Triste: "Where are you? It seems that the seats are already full, and I can't see any vacancies!"
