Text 468 Opposition in Nanyang

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

The Capitol Hill of the Republic of Nanyang, like many countries, people like to call the place where the Congress meets as the Capitol Hill.  The Nanyang Parliament is a unicameral parliament and has greater power than an ordinary bicameral parliament.  Nanyang's political system is more Western-oriented and is a semi-presidential system with its own style. Elections are still a very important part of Nanyang's political life.

Unlike many other Western-style democracies in East Asia, the Nanyang National Assembly is generally much more moderate and stable. Of course, the main reason for this is that the ruling party Nanyang Social Democratic Party occupies 36 of the 36 seats in the National Assembly, giving it an absolute majority.  It is difficult for the opposition to achieve any political goals. Basically, the decision of the Nanyang Social Democratic Party can be passed.

To a certain extent, the proportion of seats occupied by the Social Democratic Party of Nanyang Congress is higher than the proportion of seats occupied by the CPC in the National People's Congress of China.

In 193, Nanyang held its first mid-term parliamentary election, replacing half of the members. This re-election allowed the Social Democratic Party to add four more seats.  The opposition alliance did not reach an agreement in the final election, but the Social Democratic Party has a strict organization and propaganda ability of a CP nature, which makes it highly recognized among the people of the country. In addition, the economy has developed rapidly and the society is highly stable in the two years since it has been in power.  Won a lot of public support.

The one-sided situation in the politics of the Nanyang Republic is not due to the intention of the ruling Social Democratic Party to suppress other parties, but to the independent choice of the people.  In terms of constituency division and political party opening, the election is actually relatively fair. It will not rely on many small tricks to maintain the status of the ruling party like the original Singapore.  If people don't choose the opposition party, they simply don't trust them.

The opposition parties have also made a lot of efforts to change this unfavorable situation. For example, they have talked in the public opinion about the need to increase the number of seats in the National Assembly to expand speech and add different voices. Some people have even unknowingly violated the principle of racial equality in the Constitution and proposed to increase the number of minority seats.  The voice of ethnic groups gives minorities an advantage when demarcating constituencies and weightings.

These are basically difficult to achieve. To achieve these, the constitution must be revised, and constitutional revision requires the consent of a two-thirds majority of the National Assembly and a three-quarters majority of the local councils. With the current political ecology and opposition  There is simply no way such a thing can be accomplished.

The end of 2019 is the second presidential election of the Nanyang Republic. The opposition parties do not yet have a relatively attractive candidate. The 80% is similar to the first election. The threshold of less than 5% of the candidates in the first round of voting is directly eliminated.  Brush down, and the current president Wang Wuguo should be re-elected without any accident.  Even if the opposition in the re-election of parliament can win a few more seats, I am afraid that the absolute majority will still be in the hands of the Social Democratic Party.

The opposition¡¯s strategy is not to win the election, but to maximize its influence. This is also helpless.  However, at this time, the opposition had an excellent opportunity to express itself, that is, the war issue between Malaysia and Indonesia, two neighboring countries across the sea from the Nanyang Republic.

The war did not directly threaten the security of the Nanyang Republic, but it also caused some Nanyang people to worry.  The opposition took this opportunity to talk about exerting the influence of the Nanyang Republic as a regional power and protecting its own citizens, accusing the government and the Social Democratic Party of inaction, which may put the Nanyang people in greater danger.

Such a statement naturally aroused the approval of some nationalists and patriots. The opposition was quite confused for a while, because this was the first political offensive they launched to receive widespread attention across the country.  Some opposition politicians thought they had a finger on the pulse of the people, and jumped out to make extreme remarks, demanding that the government send troops to solve the immediate crisis and protect the security of Nanyang.

However, at the same time, some more rational voices reflected that the war between Malaysia and Indonesia has no direct connection with Nanyang. If you step into it self-righteously without mentioning the waste of people and money, it may cause casualties to soldiers and draw hatred to yourself.  What does it mean?

In fact, this is also a major drawback of the Western-style democratic system. It seems that extreme policies will not appear after multi-party checks and balances. Some democracy fighters also proudly claim that the policies produced under the democratic system may not be the best, but they are definitely not the worst.  But the reality is that politicians in some countries lack the necessary integrity and perseverance. They are typical outsiders who agree with whoever has a strong voice.  This has resulted in typical populist politics. Politicians who were supposed to lead and help the people have become amplifiers of populist ideas and voices. They do not have their own political norms. Those who can get them elected and gain power are their norms.

This situation is most obvious in Taiwan before reunification. The government and politicians lack a sense of responsibility and responsibility. As soon as the people express their opinions on many things, they will immediately change course. As a result, it is later discovered that the earliest plan was correct.  Many Taiwanese people find that as long as they make extreme voices, they can become reality, and they have a special sense of self-satisfaction. Therefore, whenever sensitive matters arise, the voices generated by Taiwanese people must be adjusted under various conditions.  The most biased and fierce, which ultimately led to the backboneless government to sway with the wind, and major eventsIf it fails, regional competitiveness will gradually weaken.

At this time, the Nanyang Republic has not yet reached this point. The Social Democratic Party controls the Congress and the government, and also enjoys a relatively strong voice. Although some extreme voices have appeared, the Social Democratic Party can also use its own pen and literary courage to deal with the excessive voices.  The voices are being moderated, and the Social Democratic Party¡¯s regime has good patience and perseverance. It is impossible to call it a fire when it sees a spark.

However, in response to the intensifying war between Malaysia and Indonesia, the Nanyang Congress also held a concentrated discussion. Naturally, those opposition members would not miss this opportunity to launch some alarmist remarks to gain attention.  These opposition parties, which think they have found the right development path, will indeed use such opportunities to attract some voters who are close to their doctrines, but a larger number of centrist, moderate and stable voters will inevitably distance themselves from them.

Naturally, the Social Democratic Party members in the National Assembly, which account for 93% of the total, will not be swayed by a few cats and dogs from the opposition party. The Social Democratic Party, which imitates the CP line, has a strict organizational form. Especially in this Western-style democratic system, the party organization requires members to maintain a high degree of compliance with the party line.  unity, and the party whips in Congress will also ensure that everyone votes in accordance with the decision at the party congress.

¡°According to the proposal of Councilor Gao Yuanjing, the vote on whether to submit military forces to the government to prepare for the war between Malaysia and Indonesia begins now.¡± Speaker Lim Kit Siang first asked Congress to discuss whether to pass the troop dispatch bill proposed by the opposition.  Naturally, the Nanyang Congress does not have the power to send troops, but it can propose to the government its intention to send troops. This is a so-called forcing phenomenon, because the normal process of sending troops is that the Presidential Office and the Cabinet sign an order to send troops, and then submit it to the Congress for processing  After deliberation, it can be passed by more than half of the votes.

The results of the vote are obvious. More than 80% of the members did not agree to be involved in a war that has nothing to do with them.  But then, the Social Democratic Party did not want the image of the government's inaction promoted by the opposition to be accepted, and its own members put forward a new proposal: to issue a warning to Malaysia and Indonesia not to let the war spread to the Nanyang Republic, and any harm to the citizens of the Nanyang Republic  Actions that cause harm to interests will be regarded as provocation and will be responded to.

This proposal was ultimately passed unanimously.  On the other hand, the Nanyang official government has also made some actions, such as increasing the patrol intensity of the Nanyang Navy in the Java Sea, and the air force has also strengthened the intensity of surveillance of the war. In fact, it is squeezing the warring space between the two countries, because if the expansion is too large  , it is very likely that a conflict will break out with the powerful Nanyang National Defense Force, which no one wants to see at that time.

The Nanyang Navy established a new naval base in the southern bay of Belitung Island, east of Sumatra Island. In order to supply the naval base, a town was built here, Yucheng, and the naval base was called Yucheng Naval Base.  The harbor conditions here are not very good. Although the harbor is wide, the water is not deep. Qi Yiming originally sent red alert engineering equipment to clean up the water.

The main significance of building a naval base here is to monitor and defend Malaysia and Indonesia.  The Nanyang Navy regularly deploys two 05 frigates, three 056 corvettes and one 03 submarine, plus some auxiliary ships.  After the Ministry of National Defense's military order was promulgated, the Nanyang Navy deployed two 052 destroyers and two 05 frigates to this area to strengthen the Nanyang Navy's military presence in the Java Sea.

This trick is indeed effective. Worried about unnecessarily dragging Nanyang into the war, the Malaysian Navy and the Indonesian Navy consciously suspended the confrontation at sea, and the battle returned to the ground in Lampung Province.

The Southern Malaysian Army, which had a large amount of Soviet-made equipment, formed a superior combat effectiveness under Sidi's armed forces. Soon Sidi's Southern Malaysian Army invaded Lampung Province. His armored vehicles mainly consisted of T55 tanks and BNP-l armored vehicles.  The troops moved southward along the highway, broke through multiple lines of defense of the Indonesian Army, and captured half of Lampung Province in less than half a week, causing the Indonesian Army to be in panic for a while.

Unwilling to fail, President Suharto dispatched more Indonesian troops from Java Island to Lampung Province in Sumatra. The two sides launched a larger-scale strangulation in Metro, and in the end there was no winner.  Sidi ordered the Southern Malay Army not to rush to attack, but instead allowed the Malay soldiers to rob and destroy Javanese villages in Lampung Province everywhere, rob wealth and rape women, causing great damage to Lampung Province.

Suharto gritted his teeth about this, but he did not have enough power to drive Sidi out of Lampung Province. In the end, he had to lodge a complaint at the United Nations, hoping to use the power of the international community to drive the Malay army out of Lampung Province.  The United Nations subsequently issued an ultimatum, requiring Sidi to withdraw immediately from Indonesian soil. Seeing that Sidi had already taken advantage of it and had the effect of weakening Indonesia, he complied with the wishes of the United Nations and withdrew his troops from Lampung Province, announcing that  Unilateral ceasefire.

Although the Malaysia-India crisis has been resolved, it has made the conflict between Malaysia and Indonesia even more intense. It seems that it is only a matter of time before the next battle occurs.
