Text Chapter 488: Acoustic homing torpedo, the weapon that determines victory or defeat

Previous page        Return to Catalog        Next page

The existence of early warning aircraft is an extremely confidential matter among the national socialist government. In terms of confidentiality level, it is even on the same level as atomic bombs and Lingbo-class aircraft carriers, and even higher than jet aircraft.

This is mainly because the existence of jet aircraft itself is not a secret matter. Countries have researched it. Even countries like Germany have begun to field jet fighters on a small scale. Therefore, although the existence of jet aircraft is a secret,  But not as much as atomic bombs and early warning aircraft.

Both the Air Force and the Navy are looking forward to early warning aircraft. After all, the detection distance of early warning aircraft for low-altitude flying targets exceeds 100 kilometers, and the detection distance for large targets on the sea reaches more than 300 kilometers. Although such performance cannot be called  Clairvoyance, but at least clairvoyance is still okay.

But even if it is clairvoyance, there are times when it is not useful.

At least this time, several early warning aircraft failed to detect the combined fleet. Instead, the Japanese submarine discovered the location of the Ocean Fleet first.

This is not surprising. In the vast sea, although the detection range of more than 300 kilometers of the early warning aircraft itself is considered wide, there is still the possibility of not finding the target

    but¡

Since there are Japanese aircraft leading the way, it is relatively easy to find traces of the Japanese fleet, especially since there are many larger ships in the combined fleet, and these ships are invisible to radar detection.

"Report the position to the fleet"

Looking at the large dots of light displayed on the radar display, a soldier said to his companion.

The companion nodded.  Then reported the location of the combined fleet to Chen Shaokuan.

After getting the approximate location of the combined fleet, Chen Shaokuan ordered the fighter jets that had been reloaded with ammunition and fuel and the ship-to-ship battle that had just not participated in the air battle to take off

"This is a good opportunity. The Japanese would never have imagined that we had discovered their location."

Indeed, the Japanese would never have thought of it.  There is such a thing as an early warning aircraft in this world.  Of course, this does not mean that aircraft in this era are not equipped with airborne radars, but there are indeed no early warning aircrafts dedicated to warning and reconnaissance.

Under Chen Shaokuan¡¯s order, the take-off fleet flew in the direction pointed by the early warning aircraft.

On the other hand, Chen Shaokuan ordered another group of aircraft to intercept the Japanese planes flying here.

Although attacking the combined fleet is very important, if the fleet itself is sunk by the Japanese army, it will be a troublesome matter.

Because of the fighter aircraft of this period.  In particular, aircraft such as bombers fly very slowly, with some bombers even reaching speeds of more than 200 kilometers per hour.  During this time, the fleet that was targeted could move a considerable distance, so when the fleet flew to the same direction that day.  Chen Shaokuan had already commanded the fleet to move to other locations.

This also forced the Japanese aircraft group to find the location of the Ocean Fleet again. Fortunately, the ships could not move as fast as the planes, so the Japanese did not waste too much time when they arrived.

At this time, the departing fleet was almost flying over the head of the combined fleet.

Unlike land-based air forces, air battles over the sea generally occur in lower airspace.  Therefore, the Japanese easily discovered the incoming fleet.

The sudden appearance of the aircraft group surprised the Japanese, especially Yamamoto Isoroku. Originally, Yamamoto Isoroku was still playing shogi with a general there.  Wait until news of an incoming enemy plane arrives.  Yamamoto Isoroku even dropped the shogi in his hand onto the chessboard.

"How did the Chinese discover us?"

Listening to the news from subordinates, there are also sirens that have sounded.  Yamamoto Isoroku raised his head in surprise.

Originally, Yamamoto Isoroku thought he had a chance of winning since he discovered the other party's traces before the Chinese.  At least it was a certain advantage, but now

"Sir, what should I do now?"

Looking at Yamamoto Isoroku¡¯s surprised look, the general sitting opposite him and playing shogi with him asked.

"What to do?" Yamamoto Isoroku regained his composure and said something that came from Yan Guang.  "Cold salad!"

As he spoke, Yamamoto Isoroku raised his head and ordered to his subordinates.

"Order existing fighter planes to take off to meet the enemy."

    "yes!!!"

After his subordinates left, Yamamoto Isoroku glanced at the sky outside the bridge.

"I hope the take-off ship bombardment can be successful"

Yamamoto Isoroku has never regretted sending out most of his fighter planes, because victory cannot be won by defense, only by taking the initiative.? Only by destroying all the enemy's forces can success be achieved.

Therefore, what Yamamoto Isoroku is looking forward to is just that the flying troops can send back the good news he wants.

In fact, the flying force had already sent back some good news earlier, but it was just a question of whether it was good or not in Yamamoto Isoroku's opinion.

    Injured?

"What Yamamoto Isoroku wants is to sink, and preferably the largest ship in history"

But the most pressing concern right now is the enemy plane coming here, so after ordering his subordinates to put away the shogi, Yamamoto Isoroku began to command the fleet.

Yamamoto Isoroku did not send out all the ship battles, or it was impossible to send them out, so soon a group of ship battles took off to meet the enemy.

This period was still the peak period of the Japanese army. Although a considerable number of troops were consumed when going south to Southeast Asia, Australia and India, the core navy did not suffer too many losses.  Therefore, the carrier-based aircraft pilots under Yamamoto Isoroku are all the best among the best, and the ground crews are original equipment. Therefore, in a very short period of time, the ship-to-ship battle on the deck has already taken off.

A few minutes later, the two fleets collided

    "Sir, what do you think"

Looking at the battle group that was moving here, an assistant officer said with some worry.

He knows very well that the Zero War equipped by the fleet is no match for jz10

"It's useless to say anything now, we can only look at them"

Hearing the worries of his subordinates, Yamamoto Isoroku just said calmly.

    ¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª

Although the Japanese tried their best to intercept in the air.  But soon there were still many ship bombers rushing out of the battle group, and then flying towards several aircraft carriers of the combined fleet

    "Quick, meet the enemy!!!"

Looking at the bombardment of several warships swooping down, a soldier shouted loudly.

With his shout.  An anti-aircraft machine gun next to it fired at the ship facing Feixia.

However, unexpectedly, the bomber actually swooped down despite the machine gun fire, and then dropped an aerial bomb

    ¡°Boom!!!¡±

Like the Japanese, Chen Shaokuan also knew very well that in a naval battle, only the aircraft carrier was the most important, so the targets of the ship bombardment troops were almost all aircraft carriers. Only those ship bombers who were about to be shot down would randomly find a target to use their ammunition.  Throw it down.

However, even so, the ship bombardment force still caused a lot of casualties to the Japanese army.

??Especially the torpedoes dropped by the ship bombardment force.  Although many times the Japanese felt that they had escaped, unexpectedly, these torpedoes continued to chase them after they had escaped

    "Acoustic homing torpedo"

Looking at a hit Akizuki-class destroyer in the distance, Yamamoto Isoroku¡¯s hands held the railing tightly.

Acoustic homing torpedo.  It is a self-guided torpedo that can receive noise from water and ships. This torpedo greatly improves the hit rate.

Although Japan does not have such a torpedo, it does not mean that Yamamoto Isoroku has not heard of it, because both Germany and the United States are developing such torpedoes.

? Among them, Japan¡¯s ally Germany has developed two models: t4 and t5.  The model developed in the United States is the mk24.

The idea of ??creating a torpedo that could "automatically" find its target appeared in the minds of torpedo designers during World War I.  The major naval powers at that time were very interested in this, but the scientific research level at that time was not yet able to turn it into reality. At that time, there was still a lack of in-depth research on the physical mechanism of sound generation and propagation in seawater.  1933.  Germany began to develop acoustic homing torpedoes.  In 1943, the T4 "Falcon" and T5 "Wren" torpedoes were put into actual combat.

Autumn 1941.  The U.S. Navy asked the U.S. Defense Research Council to explore the possibility of developing a small air-delivered anti-submarine acoustic homing torpedo.  In response to this request, on December 10, 1941, personnel from science and industry held a meeting at Harvard University's Underwater Acoustics Laboratory.  The possibility of developing such a torpedo was discussed.  Soon after, at the second meeting held in the David Taylor Ship Model Test Tank, it was determined that the basic development performance parameters of the torpedo were as follows: the size should be suitable for the 454kg bomb rack, that is, it should be less than 48cm x 48cm;  It is launched at an altitude of 6,090 meters at a speed of 12 knots. It uses lead-acid batteries and electric propulsion. At a speed of 12 knots, the endurance time is 515 minutes. It carries a 45kg high-explosive warhead and adopts passive acoustic homing.

For the Americans, the speed of 12 knots is enough to catch up with the underwater submarine, and the endurance of 15 minutes is enough to guide the torpedo to the target on its own and detonate the warhead on impact.  Therefore, the performance of mk24??The Americans are quite satisfied. To the Americans, it is a weapon specially used to deal with submarines.

Unlike the Americans, the T4 and T5 torpedoes developed by the Germans, on the other hand, are specifically used to deal with ships on the sea - after all, they are the wolves under the ocean.

The T4 torpedo developed by the Germans has a diameter of 533mm, a warhead weight of 280 kilograms, uses electric propulsion, has a range of 7,500 meters, and a speed of 20 knots per hour.

The T4 was the first self-guided torpedo, produced in March 1943, and equipped with a passive sound guidance device.  It is mainly used when U603, U758, and U221 attack the HX229 convoy fleet and SC122 convoy fleet.

As for T5, it is the same 533mm diameter torpedo as T4, with a warhead weight of 274 kilograms. It also uses electric propulsion, has a range of 5,700 meters, and a speed of 24 knots.

The T5 was put into use in the autumn of 1943. It is characterized by fast, effective attack distance and can be detonated by magnetic or trigger methods.  It was originally designed as a escort killer. Although it achieved some small results, it was a pity that the Allies soon had a device to deal with it-the noise jammer foxer.  In addition, its working principle is to lock on the loudest ship 400 meters after launch, which can be proved by facts.  If the U-boat launches through the stern launch tube, it must quickly dive below 60 meters after launch, otherwise it will become a target of T5 because of the loud sound.  U972 and U377 were almost hit by their own T5 torpedoes in December 1943 and January 1944 respectively.

    ¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª¡ª

Like the Germans and Americans, the Chinese Navy also attaches great importance to the development of torpedoes.  For them, a torpedo that can track its target on its own is what they dream of.

So after possessing a little capital, the development of self-guided torpedoes began.

However, unlike Germany and the United States, China has not only developed torpedoes to deal with surface ships, but also developed torpedoes specifically designed to deal with underwater submarines.

In addition, these torpedoes are also divided into three types: aircraft use, ship use and submarine use.

Aircraft naturally refers to aircraft such as warships and bombers, and ships refer to surface ships such as torpedo boats and destroyers. As for submarines, there is no need to explain.

In fact, for the National Defense Navy, self-guided torpedoes are also a new gadget.  The latest final product put into production was installed in 1941.  So far, there are only tens of thousands of acoustic homing torpedoes equipped by surface ships such as submarine forces and torpedo boats, and the number of air-dropped types is even smaller

And in order to be able to destroy the combined fleet in one fell swoop.  The Navy has taken out almost all the air-dropped homing torpedoes.

In addition, the United States did not position the homing torpedo as a submarine-launched torpedo at the beginning, but as an air-dropped torpedo. This avoided the technical problem of how to avoid the torpedo from attacking itself after entering the water. It can be said that the weapon project positioning is very accurate.  When German submarines use homing torpedoes, it has always been a headache for them to avoid attacking themselves and friendly ships.

However, Chen Shaokuan had no such trouble at all.  Because all the current ship bombardments are air-dropped, unless they can fly out of the water like flying fish, they will never pose any threat to the ship bombardment in the air

    but¡

It may not be the case for Yamamoto Isoroku

    "Boom!!! Boom!!!"

In just an instant, two homing torpedoes hit the Hiryu aircraft carrier.  And two large holes were opened in the hull of the aircraft carrier.

The air-dropped acoustic homing torpedo equipped by the navy has a speed of only more than 20 knots.  It is completely incomparable to the high speed of around 30 knots that modern aircraft carriers can achieve, but if the torpedo is thrown from the front.  It is very difficult to avoid these torpedoes with a speed of more than 20 knots.

    the most important is¡

The Japanese had no idea that the Wehrmacht would be equipped with self-guided torpedoes, so when they thought they had avoided it, they had almost no adaptability when the torpedo turned and continued to swim

    "Boom!!! Boom!!!"

Facing this unprecedented torpedo, the Japanese fleet almost fell into chaos. They had no idea how to avoid these torpedoes. In a corner of the combined fleet, two ships even collided with each other in order to avoid the torpedoes.

On the other hand, since the self-guided torpedoes equipped by the navy, like the German T5, will automatically turn to the largest target, after sailing for a period of time, these torpedoes will almost all automatically turn to targets such as aircraft carriers and battleships.  Even if there is no steering, the hit rate is greatly improved when dealing with ordinary ships because of this self-guiding ability.

Seriously speaking, there is actually no way to deal with this kind of torpedo. At least in history, the Allies have developed it.Instead of using something like a noise jammer foxer to jam acoustic homing torpedoes, the Germans' solution was to develop wire-guided torpedoes with stronger anti-jamming capabilities.

However, although there is such a thing as a noise jammer, the Japanese never thought that they would encounter such a weapon in advance. In addition, the noise jammer was developed by the Allies after spending countless blood and tears.  For this new type of weapon, Yamamoto Isoroku was almost at a loss.

Originally, Yamamoto Isoroku¡¯s plan was to destroy the Ocean Fleet through conventional naval battles, or at least severely damage it, just like the British fleet.

In fact, the battle situation did turn in his favor to some extent. At least he discovered the enemy's traces earlier than the Ocean Fleet with early warning aircraft, and therefore made the Ocean Fleet pay a certain price.

Although it was somewhat beyond Yamamoto Isoroku's expectations that the enemy's carrier-based aircraft rushed over not long after, he didn't pay much attention to it.

After all, Yamamoto Isoroku never thought that the position of his fleet would never be discovered.  Although Yamamoto Isoroku was not aware of the existence of the early warning aircraft, in his opinion, he had already made a profit by discovering the target before the enemy.

Next, as long as it is commanded according to the conventional mode, the combined fleet has six aircraft carriers, coupled with the Philippine shore-based aviation, it may not be unable to severely damage the Ocean Fleet.

    But now

Looking at the torpedoes on the sea that can track their targets on their own, although Yamamoto Isoroku's own castle did not plunge him into chaos, he had no solution to the current predicament the fleet was in.

The only order he could give was to order the aviation units to desperately intercept the enemy's ship bombardment, and at the same time order all ships in the fleet to make evasive actions as much as possible.

However, these actions that were extremely effective in the past have become less effective when facing homing torpedoes

In fact, Yamamoto Isoroku should be lucky, because the guided bombs specially developed for the navy have not been officially put into service due to some problems. Otherwise, his situation may be much worse.

And just when he was trying his best to think of a solution, another aircraft carrier was hit

    "Canglong!!!"

Looking at the hit aircraft carrier, Yamamoto Isoroku shouted in pain.  To be continued.  .
