Chapter 129: Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty came east in response to Buddhist teachings, and Zen Buddhism established the Sixth Patriarch

The human world is east of Shenzhou and Chang'an City.  Baidu search enters "" to quickly enter this site

After Li Yuan, the great ancestor of the Tang Dynasty, took over the world, he passed the throne to his second son Li Shimin due to the Xuanwu Gate Incident. Li Shimin was the Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, and his reign was Zhenguan. It is now the thirteenth year of Zhenguan.

Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, was an emperor through the ages for his literary merits and military virtues!  During the Zhenguan period, there was great governance. No items were picked up on the roads of the Tang Dynasty, no houses were closed at night, the people were prosperous, the army and horses were strong, and all the countries from overseas came to court!

On this day, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty was taking a nap at noon, and he fell asleep in a daze. Suddenly, a golden light shone, Sanskrit sounds came in bursts, a strange fragrance slowly floated by, and a barefoot, red-faced monk came from the west singing songs.  :

"The golden elixir of lotus root is offered to Sakyamuni, and the Tathagata has a long life as long as the sand of eternity. The three-carriage brocade of Qingping and Yongle, the nine-grade flower of longevity in Kangtai. The true Dharma king in the Wuxiang Sect, the sky is the color of the immortal family. The universe and the earth are called ancestors, six feet of gold  Good health and longevity."

When Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty saw that this visitor was an extraordinary person, he did not dare to neglect him. He only stepped forward and asked, "What is the name of the eminent monk? In which ancient temple are you doing this?"

The great monk clasped his hands together and sang a promise: "The poor monk is called Tathagata, and the world is a place for the poor monk to cultivate! The poor monk and Your Majesty once had a relationship!"

Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty suddenly became alert and hurriedly bowed and said: "It turns out to be the Tathagata Buddha of Western Buddhism who gave me my name in the past! But I don't know what the Buddha has to say when he comes from the west."

When Taizong of the Tang Dynasty was just born, he came from the west and left the four words "helping the world and peace of the people" with his great ancestor Li Yuan, so the great ancestor named Taizong "Li Shimin".

Taizong of the Tang Dynasty spent his whole life as a soldier, fighting in the north and south.  After gaining great power, the country's governance policies were based on Taoism and Confucianism and Legalism, so he didn't know much about Buddhism.  However, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty did not forget the help given to him by the thirteen stick monks of the Shaolin Temple in the past, and he canonized the Shaolin Temple as a royal temple.  It was during the Zhenguan period that the Zen Buddhism in Shaolin Temple began to flourish.

Tathagata said: "Your Majesty, our Buddhism has always been responsible for educating the world. Now that the Dao has prospered Buddhism, our Buddhism still has ninety-nine and eighty-one scriptures, which should be spread to the world in the Shaolin Temple!"

How could Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty not know the meaning of Tathagata?  Immediately he said: "How dare I forget that I was saved by the thirteen stick monks of Shaolin Temple in the past? I will discuss this matter with the ministers tomorrow morning! I hope that the Buddhist scriptures will come east as soon as possible!"

The Tathagata said: "Namo Amitabha, this will help your majesty. Your majesty has a broad mind, so you should be a good person and be rewarded!" After that, another burst of golden light flashed by, and the figure disappeared!

Tang Taizong was startled and suddenly realized that it was just a dream.

Among the five mountains, Songshan Mountain, the middle mountain, is the most majestic, elegant and attractive.  Songshan lies east and west.  It is majestic in the Central Plains, bounded by the Shaolin River in the middle, with the main peak Taishi Mountain in the east and the side peak Shaoshi Mountain in the west. There are a total of seventy-two peaks!  Shaolin Temple, the world-famous birthplace of Zen Buddhism, is located on Shaoshi Mountain, a side peak in the west.

The Shaolin Temple was founded by Bodhidharma, the first ancestor of Zen Buddhism. It has gone through five generations now, and its abbot is Hongren, the fifth ancestor.  Since being canonized as a national temple by Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, Shaolin Temple has been flourishing and developing rapidly.

The mountain behind the Shaolin Temple is facing a cliff. According to legend, it was the place where Bodhidharma founded Zen Buddhism after facing the wall for nine years. It has always been a forbidden place for Buddhism, with only a few monks left to clean it up. Ordinary people are not allowed to come near.  But today, there are four figures on this cliff, the first of which is a majestic one.  With a red face, bare feet, and droopy ears, he is none other than Tathagata Buddha, who is known as the ancestor of all Buddhas.

Behind the Tathagata stands a female Buddha, with a dignified appearance and a compassionate face.  He held a jade purification bottle in his hand.  There is a willow tree inserted in the vase. This person is Guanyin Bodhisattva, the Buddhist manager of eastern affairs.

There were two more people standing behind Guanyin Bodhisattva.  One of them is an old monk with white eyebrows, wearing a golden cassock and holding a golden bowl. Next to the old monk stands a young man with a handsome face and an eyebrow that seems to have color.  These two people were Hongren, the fifth patriarch of Shaolin Temple, and his disciple Shenxiu.

Tathagata raised his eyes and looked at the hole in the wall facing Nadharma.  This stone cave is about one foot high, and its square door opens to the sun, making it warm in winter and cool in summer, with fresh air.  ?There is a compact small lawn in front of the cave, surrounded by thick shade and no sky. It is really a good place for cleaning.

When the Tathagata came close enough to go forward, he saw the shadow of Patriarch Bodhidharma printed on the wall of the cave. It was exactly the image of Bodhidharma in his usual posture facing the wall. He had a square head, broad eyes, and a beard all over his face. The folds and wrinkles of his clothes were vaguely visible, just like the figure of Bodhidharma.  A pale ink portrait.  Next to the image of Bodhidharma facing the wall, there is a small poem that Bodhidharma himself carved after he successfully meditated while facing the wall. The poem says: "I originally came from this land to teach the Dharma to save people from infatuation. One flower blooms with five leaves, and the fruit will come naturally."

The Tathagata pondered for a moment, pronounced the Buddha's name to the portrait of Bodhidharma, and came out of the cave!

The Tathagata saw Shenxiu, the great disciple next to the Fifth Patriarch Hongren, and said: "Namo Amitabha, Shenxiu, now you have learned all the true teachings of Hongren, but you don¡¯t know if you have any enlightenment in Buddhist practice?  "

Shenxiu Tao means the Tathagata is studying himself. He pondered for a while and said: "The body is like a bodhi tree, and the mind is like a mirror stand. Always brush it diligently to prevent it from causing dust."

Tathagata Buddha and Guanyin Bodhisattva looked at each other and noticed the wry smile in each other's eyes.

The Tathagata had no expression on his face and was waiting to speak. Suddenly, a voice came and said: "Elder Shenxiu's words are superficial and cannot be taken as the true meaning of Buddhism!" On the way up to the cliff, he saw a middle-aged man in coarse cloth.  The monk held a broom in his hand and walked forward slowly!

The monk stepped forward and saluted: "Namo Amitabha. The poor monk's name is Huineng. He is a disciple of the outer courtyard of Shaolin Temple. He is usually responsible for cleaning the walls and cliffs. I just saw Elder Shenxiu preaching. I couldn't help it and disturbed everyone's interest. Please also invite me.  Don¡¯t be offended!¡±

The so-called disciples of the outer courtyard are what the Shaolin Temple calls some disciples who do odd jobs. Hui Neng is from southern Guangdong. Southern Guangdong was a barbaric place in the Tang Dynasty. Hui Neng was naturally assigned to the disciples who were doing odd jobs. He was responsible for the founder of Bodhidharma facing the wall.  The cleaning of the cliff.

Hui Neng didn¡¯t force it. He worked on the cliff for more than ten years. Apart from eating and sleeping, he spent the rest of his time on this cliff.

Shenxiu had an arrogant temperament and was not happy to be accused by Huineng. He immediately shouted: "Huineng, you have been in Shaolin for more than ten years. You have been cleaning on this cliff and have never heard of Buddhism. How can you accuse me?"

There was no sadness or joy on Huineng's face, and he said calmly: "Buddha is not in the ears, not in the eyes. Where there is a Buddha's heart, there is the Buddha's Dharma. Although I have never entered a Buddhist hall, for more than ten years, I have been facing the wall of Bodhidharma every day.  I clean the cliff, but every time I sweep it, I feel the Dharma again!"

Huineng¡¯s words coincide exactly with the Zen enlightenment of ¡°seeing the clear nature of the mind¡±!

Zen Buddhism was originally transmitted by Tathagata to his great disciple Kassapa. Tathagata understood what Hui Neng meant!  The Tathagata nodded slightly, and saw Shenxiu next to him with a look of disapproval. Then the Tathagata said: "Huineng, since you said that Shenxiu cannot see the clear nature of the mind, how about you also do it?"

Huineng put down the broom in his hand, folded his hands, and said, "Dare you disobey the Buddha's order?" After saying that, he opened his mouth and read: "Bodhi has no tree, and the mirror is not a stand; there is nothing in the first place, so how can it cause dust."

Next to me, the Fifth Patriarch Hongren heard Huineng's words. After reciting them silently in his heart several times, he sighed: "It is my fault to make the pearls become covered with dust. To make the sun and moon flow like fireflies. This is Hongren's fault!"

Shenxiu saw Hongren acting like this.  He was very dissatisfied and said, "What you are doing is contrary to what I have done. You are not really capable!" Shenxiu's words have some truth to them.

Hearing this, the Tathagata smiled lightly and said nothing.  Seeing this scene, Guanyin Bodhisattva next to him said: "In that case, I will ask a question. How do you two answer it?"

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva raised his eyes and saw that the entire Songshan Mountain scenery was almost panoramic. It was quiet, far-reaching, and extremely beautiful.  The Shaolin River sandwiched between Taishi Mountain and Shaoshi Mountain is like a long white stream, sparkling under the direct sunlight, winding through the mountains and ravines.  There is a small boat on the Shaolin River, swinging left and right.  There was a sail hanging on the boat, fluttering in the wind.

Avalokitesvara had an idea and said: "Namo Amitabha, you two can see the wind blowing and the sails on the little boat moving, but you don't know whether it is the wind moving or the sails moving?"

Shenxiu was able to obtain the true biography of the Fifth Patriarch Hongren, so he was not an ordinary person. He immediately took the lead and said: "No sail will not move, no sail will not move, the wind will not move, the wind will move, the sail will also move!"

This answer is quite satisfactory. There is nothing outstanding about it, but there is nothing wrong with it!  Wu Zuhong couldn't bear to say that he was afraid that if he answered it himself, he would not be any better than Shenxiu. He nodded unconsciously at the moment!

But Huineng said quietly: "It's not the wind that's moving, it's not the sail that's moving, but the heart of a benevolent person is moved!"

These words were like a thunderbolt in the clear sky, shocking the god into silence. However, the Fifth Patriarch Hongren looked excited. He turned around and bowed deeply to the hole in the wall in front of Patriarch Nadharma, saying: "Master, by your side, Zen Buddhism will eventually flourish."  Let your light shine on the world!"

Tathagata Buddha and Guanyin Bodhisattva looked at each other and smiled. They took out a robe and a bowl that were passed down from the Zen sect and handed them to Shenxiu and Huineng respectively. They asked them to preach from north to south and spread Buddhism. Later, Huineng was more skilled and took over the mantle.  Became the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism.  ?

????????? Later, after finishing the matter of passing on the throne of Zen Buddhism, Tathagata saw off Hongren and his party, leaving Guanyin alone.

Tathagata couldn't help but sigh and said nothing.

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva said: "Namo Amitabha, but we are so incompetent that the Buddha has to make this trip himself!"

The Tathagata sighed and said: "Bodhisattva, there is no need to blame yourself. Things in the world are constantly changing, how can you always get what you want? This is also beneficial, and it can promote our?, and it is also because of this that I found Huineng.  "

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? The Tathagata Buddha had no need to personally go to find Emperor Taizong Li Shimin of the Tang Dynasty, and to put an end to the cause and effect of the Thirteen-stick Monk who rescued him in Luoyang back then?  There is no reason for the world to think that Buddhism relies on the hope of repaying kindness, and it loses face.  Moreover, if Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty had been narrow-minded and insisted on repaying karma by conferring Shaolin Temple as a national temple, Buddhism would have nothing to say!

This Guanyin Bodhisattva had earlier obtained rumors about the scenic spot of Xitian Lingshan, and wanted to cause some trouble, so that Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty took the initiative to send people to Buddhism to obtain the true scriptures. Unexpectedly, before the trouble was solved, he discovered that Li Shimin's subordinates of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty were found.  Fang Xuanling and Wei Zheng were members of the Taoist sect. Guanyin knew at a glance that if he went to spread rumors and cause trouble, it would be more difficult for him to see through the envoy of Buddhism, so he returned to Lingshan to report to Sakyamuni.  With this trip.

By the way, our protagonist Di Xu is now talking about things here in the Wuzhuang Temple of Zhen Yuanzi, the ancestor of the Earth Immortal, which is the only place he must pass on his way to the west.
